   Richard Gere delivers perhaps the most substantive performance of his career as an unruly Marine enlistee who, under the persistent training of his hard-nosed CO (Louis Gosset Jr.), becomes and officer, and under the persistent affection of a feisty local girl (Debra Winger), becomes a gentleman. His most compelling lesson in pride and self-worth, however, comes from the misfortune of his best friend, played earnestly by standout David Keith. Though its gender stereotypes prove somewhat overbearing, this movie manages a unique mesh of realism and fantasy, comedy and tragedy. One thing that we never forget this film is its theme song, "Up Where We Belong,"which is collected Oscars.
