Dimitrije Milovich starts
developing snowbords based on the design of a
surfboard with the idea of how skis work.

1971
|
Milovich is granted a patent
for his snowboard design so he could sell the
idea to ski companies. The patent didn't expire
until 1988. Milovich declines from enforcing the
patent with other companies.

1975
|
Dimitrije Milovich sets up
Winterstick production. Milovich developes a
swallow-tail board which is based on the design
in surf boards. One year later he developed a
double edged design.

|
Winterstick is written up in
Newsweek and have a two-page photo spread in
Powder, giving snowbaording some natural
exposure.

1977
|
Jake Burton Carptenter moves
to Stratton Mountain, Vermont. He works nbights
as a bartender and desinged prototypes for
snowboards during the day.

1977
|
Milovich obtains written
confirmation from the insurance brokers of
America's ski resorts, that snowbaords are
covered under regular ski liability. This proves
that the resort acceptance was based on the
mountain manager's preferance.

|
Milovich says that
Wintersticks have been sold in 11 different
foriegn countries.

|
Chuck Barfoot developes a
fiberglass prototype for a snowbaord and with Bob
Webber, he takes it out to Utah for a test run.

1979
|
Paul Graves, Snurfer pro,
appears in the first T.V. snowboarding commercial
for LaBatt's beer. The commercial runs four
years.

Mark Anolik discovers the
Tahoe City Halfpipe, it is the world's first
snowboard halfpipe. The halfpipe attracts
photographers from many skateboard magazines. |
