ROSWELL
Season 1, Episode 13: The Convention Man
Day ONE:
The likes of Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, and even Jonathan Frakes (was on Star Trek: Next Generation, as well as directed ep7 (River Dog)). The episode opens with a costumed alien handing out fliers for the UFO Museum. "It" sees Liz at the Crashdown across the street, and stares at her, heavily breathing like Darth Vadar.
Meanwhile, the sheriff is swamped with work. As he walks into his office hurriedly, he finds a man sitting in his chair. This mysterious man seems to know the sheriff and before Valenti can get over his shock, the man leaves.
Funny scene: At the UFO Museum, Michael and Isabelle are staking out the joint. While Michael listens uninterestedly to a UFO-believer, the costumed alien from the opening staggers down the stairs. "Save me... save me... I'm a human trapped in an alien body..." it cries out, gasping for air. When the costume's head is pulled off, a hyperventilating Max is revealed, his hair styled like Michael's.
The Crashdown is also busy, cramped with alien "experts" and alien-wannabes. Liz is surprised to find the strange couple (Larry and Jennifer) that was present the day Max saved her (see ep1). Larry gets right down to it: "Why don't you tell me what really happened in September?"
Back at the UFO Museum, Max pulls Michael aside and asks him how he stopped thinking about Maria. Max confides in his friend that every time he sees Liz, she goes into slow motion. Michael tells him to be strong, and think of mud whenever he sees Liz.
As he is still trying to get over Liz, Max asks his boss for more work. Put in charge of celebrity relations, Max's boss (oh, his name is Milton!) tells him that it would be great if they could get Everett Hubble to be on a panel. When they are introduced, Max is curious about Hubble, who is very mysterious and keeps disappearing. Hubble chuckles at the alien museum, knowing that none of it is real, before he walks away.
At this time, Valenti has gone home to look at an old storage box of his father's. It is full of alien-related paraphanelia, and Valenti pulls out a crumpled old newspaper, it's headling reading "Roswell Sheriff Taken in for Questioning for the Silo Murder," and showing a photo of Valenti Sr.
Fast forward to the UFO Museum, Max is at the information desk, trying to pass the time. When Liz shows up to tell him that the couple from the September shooting is back with renewed suspicions, Max does not hear her. He sees her in slow motion, and suddenly says, "Mud."
Valenti suddenly shows up at the UFO Museum and finds Hubble there. He confronts him, accusing him of driving his father insane. Hubble is calm, and lures Valenti by telling him about the silo murder, of which he was the only witness. Valenti is speechless, torn between bitterness and curiousity.
Day TWO:
At the Crashdown, Liz notices Jennifer (the woman from the odd couple) reading Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus (takes on new significance now, eh? ^_~). When Liz begins to question her, she begins to cry, and Liz comforts her.
Meanwhile, Michael sees Larry (the man from the odd couple) wandering around at the UFO Museum. Max tries to talk to Hubble, to see what he knows, but he is not talkative. Later that day, Max uses Milton's UFO database to look up information on Hubble. He only finds news relating to the Silo incident.
Someone else is trying to do some background on Hubble at the same time. Valenti is at the rest home again, questioning his father. Valenti Sr. mentions Hubble's wife, but Valenti dismisses it, because Hubble was obviously single.
The UFO Museum hosts another panel. While Max and Michael look on in horror, Larry rises to talk about an incident involving "alien contact." He begins to describe the September shooting; Michael passes him nonchalantly, using his powers to make him itch. The audience does not take him seriously, as he is sweating and itching, and rambling on like a maniac. Max and Milton take him and drag him out of the room; all the while, Larry is pointing at Max, yelling out "this is the guy, this is the guy right here!"
Outside, Larry is trying to relieve his itching. Hubble walks up to him and asks him to tell him more about this story. "Tell me everything, tell me about Max Evans, tell me what you saw," Hubble says.
Day THREE:
While Frakes is swamped with photos with fans, Max asks Milton more about Hubble. He gets more questions than answers.
On the other side of the Museum, Amy DeLuca is in despair. She has set up a wrestling booth to help advertise her merchandise, and one of the wrestlers just quit.
At the same time, Valenti and Hubble are talking about tracking aliens. Hubble has a collection of photographs, each with a dead body, branded with an alien's handprint. Hubble explains that at the silo, Valenti Sr. had shot a man that they thought was an alien, but was really innocent. Hubble is determined to track down this alien, not for the sake of it being an alien, but it being a murderer. He then asks Valenti about Max Evans, if he anything to do with this. The sheriff answers slowly, "...Maybe."
Isabelle sighs as she hears a knock on the Evans' door. In trying to escape the alien convention, she could not, however, escape Alex. Alex offers her a book of constellations he picked up for her; in return, Isabelle tells him that he is suffocating her and that it has to stop. Alex, obviously broken-hearted, leaves.
Back at the Crashdown, Jennifer is telling her new friends, Liz, Maria, and Amy (Maria's mom) about how much guys suck. Alex comes in, feeling low, and asks them for some female advice. "Do you find all men obsessive?" he asks innocently. Wrong question. The girls go off about how much their respective guys have been obsessive, and just used the obsession as an excuse, a cover-up for their fear of intimacy and commitment. Alex rethinks his question, and asks about a guy whose obsession is the girl. The girls again agree on one opinion: "Yeah right... dream on..."
Milton interrupts this funny conversation to tell Amy that the wrestling match is almost over! Amy is surprised, since one of the wrestlers had cancelled earlier that day. She runs to the Museum to find a costumed wrestler, sprawled out. It turns out to be Michael, who is "just resting" after obviously getting his butt kicked. Maria sees it as endearing, to do such a thing for her mother, and begins to kiss him, when Michael suddenly says, "Mud."
While looking at the photos that Hubble gave him, Valenti notices a license plate in the photo of a dead woman. He looks it up on his computer, and the car turns out belonging to the wife of Hubble!
Meanwhile, Hubble stops by the UFO Museum again. Max tries to "convince" him to do the panel the next day; Hubble immediately agrees. He tells Max that he left his slides at home, though, and his car had broken down. Max, of course, offers to drive him to his home to pick the slides up. As Max leaves with Hubble, Michael sees this and immediately goes after Larry. Larry confesses to telling Hubble about the shooting incident, and Michael becomes worried.
After Michael runs off, Larry runs to the Crashdown. He finds Jennifer and apologizes, telling her that they should settle down in Roswell, where he can pursue his hobby and marry her.
Valenti is on a roll. He stops by to see his father again, with the new fact that Hubble had a wife. Though his father seems a bit untalkative, Valenti reasons that it must have been Hubble who killed the innocent man in the silo, not Valenti Sr. He realizes that Hubble must be up to no good, and that he was dangerous. His father gives him one more piece of advice: "Whatever you do, Jimmy, don't trust him."
While driving toward Hubble's house on Bitter Lake (ironic... you'll see later), Hubble becomes reminiscent of his dead wife. He tells Max about their anniversary: They each had surprises for each other... Hubble's was a bunch of firecrackers he picked up on the side of the road. They went to a gas station to get matches, and when Hubble came back, his wife lay dead, with a handprint on her collarbone. By this time, Max had obeyed Hubble's request and pulled over to the same gas station Hubble remembered the incident happening at.
When Hubble tells Max to own up to his murders, Max begins to panic. Hubble pulls a gun on Max, and Max really starts to freak out. Thankfully, Michael shows up (how, I don't know) and Max jumps on Hubble. The gun falls out of his hand, and as Hubble reaches for it, Max uses his powers to make it slide farther away.
"I KNEW IT!!!" Hubble exclaims. Sheriff Valenti suddenly appears and Hubble scrambles to his feet, gun in hand. "I knew it!" he repeats, and tells Valenti that he saw Max use his powers. Max, at the mercy of both Hubble and Valenti, can only stand there. Hubble is about to pull the trigger when Valenti shoots him!
Michael runs to Max, to make sure his friend is alright. Max is obviously shaken, and yells at the sheriff. "You're the sheriff, you're supposed to protect me!" he shouts vehemently. Valenti tries to defend himself, telling Max that he didn't know Hubble was this dangerous. For once, Max and Michael have switched rolls: Max continues to yell at the sheriff, while Michael tries to hold him back and keep him calm. "You want me?! Well here I am!!!" Max exclaims, exasperated and angry.
Finally, Michael is able to pull him away, and they leave the sheriff standing alone over Hubble's body.
