This episode opens up at none other than the Crashdown Cafe. Alex practices his guitar while Liz and Maria scrub the place down. Alex mentions a contest his band has entered, where the winner gets to play at a radio-sponsored "Blind Date" concert. When he hears the DJ on the radio mention the "Blind Date" contest, he turns it up. Maria, suddenly excited, bounces over to the radio and they listen in as the KROZ DJ announces the winner: "...Liz Parker!" As he announces the name, the doors to the Crashdown Cafe fly open, and a whole KROZ and camera crew flock in. Liz is bewildered, since she never entered; Maria addresses her astonishment quickly, telling her she entered them both. When the crew of cameras and microphones spot Liz, they surround her like vultures. The DJ asks her with a fake grin, "What's running through your mind at this moment?" "...Oh, um, nothing I can say on live radio," Liz smiles, gritting her teeth.

The following day, Liz and Maria walk together in the halls. Liz is obviously upset about winning the radio contest; she wears a large fisherman's hat pulled down low on her head, as well as sunglasses in the building. Maria is excited for Liz, since she'll be able to go on a "dream date," and stop pining after Max.

As they round a corner, they see Alex putting up fliers. Apparently, the lead singer of his band ("The Whits"), caught mono; Maria gladly steps in, surprising both Alex and Liz. After the shock has worn off, and Alex realizes Maria is being serious, he gives in and tells her to meet his band at his house later that afternoon. Max can't help feeling jealous

Once Alex leaves, a group of girls run up to Liz and Maria, obviously excited about the Blind Date contest. Max watches gloomily from a nearby lunch table. "Evans, I know your pain, man," Kyle says sympathetically, appearing behind Max. Max denies any emotion. "I was in denial in the beginning too," Kyle replies, sitting down next to Max. "...All break-ups hurt."

"We didn't break up, Kyle."

"Max, Max, Max... don't lie to yourself like this."

"We didn't break up because we were never together."

"Wow, she really did a number on you... Well, I've come to realize, that's her pattern, that's her M.O. She's a man-eater."

After an awkward silence, Kyle disappears as quickly as he appeared, leaving Max to ponder his words.

Later that day, Maria shows up at Alex's garage. The band is in mid-song, and directly afterwards, Maria is quick to give them advice. It seems she is pretty well-versed on band "lingo," and Alex's friends seem a bit taken aback. When she hands them some of her songs (mostly pop favorites), they refuse. "...We're sort of an alternative to that," Alex tells her, brows furrowed. Maria, however, puts her foot down; she tells them that in order to win, they must compromise, and give the judges what they want to hear.

Meanwhile, the KROZ radio station has overtaken a corner of the Crashdown. The aliens are there, as always, discussing the current issues of finding Nesaro. While Michael encourages his friends to help find him, Max is not so sure. From what Hubble (see ep13) had said, Max thinks Nesaro is dangerous and capable of killing without a conscience. Michael decides that Max and Isabelle are lost in their own fantasies of their human lives, and runs off to track Nesaro himself. Quiet until then, Isabelle tells Max to be more aware of Michael's situation; not having a comfortable family life like Max and Isabelle, Michael needs the hope of finding his alien home to keep going. Isabelle leaves after that, leaving Max alone again with his thoughts. KROZ goes on the air at that time, and the DJ asks Liz what type of dream date she wants. While staring at Max, she answers each of his questions:

"Blonds or brunettes?"

"Brunettes."

"Hometown boys or out-of-towners?"

"Hometown boys are okay, but..."

"Brainiac or class clown?"

"Oh, um, I'm not into clowns."

Open books or challenges?"

"...I'm always up for a challenge."

"It sounds like we've got to find you a serious, dark-haired mystery man from an exotic place by Friday night!" the DJ announces cheerily, as he wonders aloud if there is a Mr. Right listening at that moment. Max looks over then, wanting to go to Liz, but planted firmly in his seat.

At the concert contest, Alex's band tries to tide over the judges while waiting for Maria, who is, not surprisingly, late. As the judges are about to usher them on, Maria rushes in, immaculately dressed and made over. The judges decide to give them a chance, after Maria turns on the charm.

Friday afternoon, Liz hides out in the back of the Crashdown Cafe; over the week, she had been getting lots of calls and visits from dark-haired mystery men. When Maria and Alex both show up at the same time, they begin fighting over their performance that night (apparently they won the contest!). Liz makes them realize that their performance at the concert (opening for some mystery band) will be a breakthrough for both of them.

Isabelle is reading a magazine when she hears a knock at her window. She is surprised to find Michael there; he convinces her to come with him to track down Nesaro. He tells her that it is up to the two of them, as Max is lost in his own world, centered on Liz.

Isabelle agrees, and climbs out the window, as the radio DJ plays a more romantic song, dedicated to Liz, to get the listeners in the mood for the following evening. Liz is listening to the radio at that moment, while getting ready for the Blind Date. She looks over and sees Max standing on the balcony, outside her window. He just stands there, as she walks over to him. "What're you doing here, Max?" she questions, smiling. "...I couldn't just let you find another guy," he replies, then tells her, "I love you Liz, I always loved you." They kiss afterwards, and seem to be lost in each other until a horn sounds. Liz realizes she is still standing in front of her mirror, and she had just been imagining Max's appearance. Maria appears at the door, telling her that it's time to meet her date.

Downstairs, at the Crashdown Cafe, a young man walks toward Liz. The DJ announces him as Doug Shello, a freshman at the nearby university. Liz seems nervous at first, and as the two sit down, an awkward tension pervades the air. As the radio covers every moment of their date, Max lies on his bed, staring at the ceiling, and listening. After a few minutes, he turns it off. A commotion on his lawn draws Max outside, where he finds Kyle and his friends drunk. Kyle is looking to "bury the hatchet," but Max doesn't seem interested. He then asks Max to ride along with them, then reasons that as they don't have a designated driver, and would otherwise be forced to stay on Max's lawn for the rest of the night. Max grimaces at the idea, then grudgingly complies to drive them.

Liz and her date are having a hard time already. At the fancy restaurant, they awkwardly ask each other about their meals. As the camera swings around, we see why they're being so silent; the radio and tv crews surround the couple, doting on each word they speak. From outside, Kyle and Max watch in dismay. As Max begins to leave, he sees Doug dip Liz, and kiss her. Doug whispers to Liz a plan of escaping the radio and tv hounds; after the kiss, they run quickly out of the restaurant, through the back door. Max is hurt by the kiss, and even more so when he sees Doug and Liz run out of the back door down a dark alleyway. "I gotta help you out here," Kyle tells Max, handing over his flask. Max resists at first, then after more haggling from Kyle, takes a sip.

At once, Max's vision doubles; feeling light-headed, he discovers that he's drunk! Kyle is amazed, but welcomes the drunk companion. "You really don't drink, do you?" Kyle slurs. The two of them are hilarious together, as they hang over each other, plastered.

Meanwhile, Isabelle finds herself and Michael at the town library. He explains that he mapped out the constellation he saw in his dream (Aries the Ram) to the town's markers, and one of the points landed on the library. Isabelle is amazed at his ingenuity; Michael replies that he "just knew" how to do it. The plan consists of burning a design into the ground, in hopes that Nesaro will come to them. As Michael draws the symbol with gasoline, Isabelle confesses her worries. He tries to comfort her, then strikes the match and hopes the fourth alien will appear. When the fire has burnt down the grass, Michael and Isabelle continue to stare. Isabelle urges Michael not to lose hope, but Michael does not hear her. "He's not coming... no one ever comes for me," he mutters. "I will," Isabelle replies comfortingly. "Whenever you need me." The two walk away, arms linked.

When Max challenges Kyle to a race, then disappears around a corner, Kyle is confused. Then he finds Max perched on the overhang of a nearby club. Unfortunately, while drunk, Max is not afraid of using his alien powers in public! Fortunately, though, Kyle is too drunk to realize anything is strange. Max also doesn't hold back any emotions anymore. "It's time the real Max comes out," Max tells Kyle, grinning. "You wouldn't happen to be gay, would you?" Kyle asks groggily. Max continues to tell Kyle about the differences between real Max and shy Max. They share a real bonding moment as Kyle and Max discuss Liz. Max admits that he likes Liz; the two then decide to win Liz back from Doug Shello ("Mr. Shallow"). Funny scene: As Max runs off, Kyle shuffles along, wondering aloud how the two will split Liz: "Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays? Alternate Saturdays?"

Liz and Doug have ended up at the Crashdown again, and they sit down for a real conversation. Though Doug is charismatic, Liz feels a bit strange being with him.

As the band and Maria wait in their dressing room, the judges come in with a music producer. They are excited about Maria's performance, and Alex begins to feel even more alienated by the attention. "It's my band," he mutters.

Max and Kyle somehow make their way to Liz's balcony. While Kyle is looking around, Max uses his powers to draw a heart with "M.E. + L.P." in it. "A symbol of my love," he explains to Kyle. "Nice. Girls always like that meaningful stuff," Kyle ponders aloud. "I suck at that."

Kyle begins to get curious about Max and Liz's relationship again. He asks Max how far he and Liz got. "...We saw into each other's souls," Max replies dreamily.

Only alcohol will allow Max to reveal his true feelings to Liz! The two find themselves in Liz's room afterwards, and while Kyle peeks in Liz's underwear drawer, Max changes a few items in her room to remind her of him (funny scene)! By this time, Liz and Doug have come upstairs from the Crashdown as the KROZ van arrived. Liz is surprised to see Kyle in her room, but even more surprised to see Max. Max explains matter-of-factly that he and Kyle are drunk, so that she shouldn't get mad. Liz becomes worried about Max and his obvious lack of common sense; she is afraid that he will expose himself. Liz pulls him aside to the balcony, while Kyle interrogates Doug. As she tries to figure out how to protect Max, his "new and improved" self is unafraid of telling her that he loves her. Liz is obviously pleased, as her fantasy is coming true in front of her eyes.

When the KROZ crew spills into Liz's room, they find Kyle and Doug are wrestling, and Liz and Max escaping down the fire escape. As the two run from the cafe, Liz begs Max to stop. Max, in turn, asks Liz to keep running, and that they can go anywhere as long as they're together. While Liz's emotions struggles to take over Liz's common sense, Max uses his power in a variety of ways, to show Liz that love he feels for her. "When I'm not with you... I go crazy," Max admits. "You're my dream girl, Liz."

Liz is so close to believing him, but the smile on her face disappears as she thinks about the next day, and the next, where Max will not be so passionate and outspoken. As she calls for a taxi, Max waves down an approaching KROZ van; the two are then taken to the concert.

"Please welcome... The Whits!" the announcer calls out enthusiastically. The crowd applauds as Maria walks on the stage, then keeps walking. Alex runs over to her, and tries to calm her down. Differences and squabbling aside, Alex gives his friend the confidence she needs to perform. Meanwhile, the radio DJ has been stalling with Liz, Doug, Kyle, and Max on the stage. He gives each guy a chance to appeal to Liz; Max's is obviously the best bet: he surprises her with a passionate kiss (remember, they're in front of an audience... and this is Max we're talking about!). As soon as their lips part, Max's face becomes filled with a look of confusion. Liz realizes that the alcohol must have worn off; Max stutters an apology, then runs off the stage. Liz looks to Doug and Kyle, then quickly follows him. As Maria's low voice (surprisingly enchanting... Maria/Majandra definitely has a presence) fills the air, Liz asks Max if he meant what he had said earlier. Max is startled, then tells her that he doesn't remember.

"...I didn't mean to ruin your night."

"...You didn't," Liz replies softly as Max disappears into the crowd.

Later that night, as no one watches, a mysterious man walks. He comes upon the spot where Michael and Isabelle had drawn the symbol, then recalls the flames. The symbol burns again, and a photograph flutters down; in the photograph are 3 teenagers walking happily down a sidewalk: Max, Michael, and Isabelle.
