ROSWELL

Season 1, Episode 4: Leaving Normal

*This episode summary contains spoilers.

Liz and Maria are waitressing at the Crashdown Cafe, during an orthodontist convention. It is absolutely crazy.

Liz spots Max taking a seat. She wanders over and they stare at each other for a bit and make small talk.

"I'll just have an Alien Blast," Max says, looking down at the menu.

"Me too," Liz replies, then blushes.

Meanwhile, two of Kyle's friends are sitting at a nearby table. They glance over and see the two of them talking.

As Max is leaving after the Cafe has closed, he walks down an alley to get to the jeep. Kyle's friends are there.

"What's going on, guys," Max says nonchalantly.

"Stay away from her," one friend says, before others show up and start beating up Max. Poor Max! Afterwards, Max shows up at Michael's house. "I'm going to kill them," Michael tells Max after he sees Max's bloody face.

"No, Michael," Max replies quickly. He figures that they can't do anything to those guys, or else news of their fight will spread throughout town, and expose them. Furthermore, he unhappily admits that he has to stop seeing Liz.

At school the next day, Liz is trying to be discreet in "bumping" into Max after P.E. When she sees his bruised face, she's immediately concerned. Max, however, brushes it off, and awkwardly tells Liz he has to go. Liz is confused by his strange behavior, but before she can say anything, Kyle shows up. "Tonight's movie night, right?" he asks, hugging her. Liz nods, forcing a smile.

At the same time, Michael bumps into one of Kyle's friends purposely. As he apologizes, he rests his hand on the guy's shoulder. Later, he watches as Kyle's friend begins to itch uncontrollably.

After school, Liz's grandmother shows up at the Cafe. Here, we find out that the Cafe is a family business, and we also get a look at Liz's dad (who I originally thought was just the manager) and mom. Liz's grandmother is excited to find out about Liz's life. Liz begins telling her grandmother about Kyle, but her grandmother senses her disinterest. When Liz begins talking about Max (mentions him as "someone else"), and though the situation is "complicated," Liz's grandmother tells her that with "soulmates" come "complications."

When Maria suddenly shows up, Liz's grandmother finds out even more about the "soulmate," whom Maria exposes as Max.

That night, Max is working at the museum, stuffing rubber intestines in a rubber alien model. Isabelle shows up and is shocked to see Max's face. Max tries to lie to her, but she demands the truth. He tells her the same things he has already told Michael, and that he is going to stop seeing Liz. When Maria asks why he doesn't just get rid of them (by using his powers), he tells her that they "have to heal normal; everything has to be normal."

As Liz and Kyle are walking back from the video store, Liz is shocked to see an ambulance and a crowd in front of the Cafe (apparently, Liz's family also lives above the cafe).

The family and Kyle end up at the hospital, and as they are waiting, Liz decides to call Max. She leaves a message on his machine, about her grandmother having a stroke, and how she is just scared. She tells him not to come to the hospital, because Kyle is there, and that she'll see him at school the next day.

Later on, Max shows up at the hospital. Liz obviously seems relieved, and the two are back in their trance-like state.

When Kyle sees Max, he asks why he is at the hospital. Max lies and tells him his cousin was in a car accident.

Right after, he is in his jeep and about to leave, when Kyle shows up. He tells Max that he appreciates Max's "help" in calming Liz down after the shooting at the Cafe, but he doesn't appreciate Max moving in on his girl. "I see it, my friends see it, the entire school see it," he tells Max. Max assures Kyle that he understands, and then drives off.

At Kyle's house, Valenti shows up after grocery shopping. They seem to have a nice father-son relationship; Kyle begins to tell his father about his troubles with Liz. The discussion leads to Max, and Valenti tells Kyle that he doesn't want him around Max. Kyle is confused, but agrees to stay away.

The next day at school, Michael is after Friend #2. After Friend #2 turns in his test, Michael gets up to turn in his. Before he puts his test down, he changes all the answers on Friend #2's test (with his powers) and leaves, smiling.

Again, when Liz tries to talk with Max, he avoids her and tries to leave. When Liz keeps following him, Max resorts to anger. He tells her that she shouldn't have called him, and that he thought they had agreed not to see each other (after the Festival in ep1). He then storms into the bathroom and knocks down a stall. Funny thing: "Ow," says a little voice, and Michael steps out of the half-collapsed stall. "Ghandi feeling frustrated?" he asks.

Michael tries to cheer Max up by showing him his latest trick: He has apparently welded Kyle's locker shut. Instead of rejoicing, Max pulls Michael into an empty classroom. "What are you doing??" Max asks, angrily. "You're putting us in danger."

"You put us in danger when you first saved Liz," Michael retorts.

"And I would do it again," Max says through gritted teeth as he pushes Michael against a wall. Their relationship obviously deteriorating, Michael tells Max that he doesn't trust anyone these days.

During a lunch break(?), Maria sees Liz sitting quietly in a lounge. They talk for a bit about Liz's grandmother, then Liz begins asking Maria about Max. She tells him that he has been avoiding her and that she feels like he's giving off a tone: that she's his enemy.

After school, Maria is going crazy with a full load of customers at the Crashdown Cafe. She and an older lady, Agnus, are the only waitresses at the Cafe, and Agnus is no help. When she sees Isabelle and her model friends walking outside, she begs her to help her wait tables.

At the hospital, Liz's family talk about the great things that her grandmother had done, when they hear hospital pages for the grandmother's room. Apparently, she has fallen deeper into a coma, and is getting worse. Maria shows up and tries to comfort Liz, but Liz tells her that she is okay.

The next day, Kyle's locker is being pried off by handiman. He mutters that it looks like it had been melted, which seems impossible.

Max is lying on his bed later that day, when Isabelle shows up in a Crashdown Cafe waitress uniform. Surprisingly out of her nature, she convinces Max to talk with Liz.

At the Cafe, Isabelle is having a great time, using her powers to fix meals (making a rare hamburger well-done). Isabelle's friends see her and are not happy, but Isabelle does not care.

When Liz suddenly shows up at Max's house, she just wants to talk. She confesses that when her grandmother had a stroke, she wanted to talk to Max. Also, she asks if Max could do anything for her grandmother. Max replies slowly that he saved Liz because it was "before her time," but that he couldn't just "heal people... I'm not... God."

At school the next day (time just flies!), Kyle is discussing with his friends the mystery of his melted locker. Friend #2 figures that it must be Max, taking revenge, since they "beat the crap out of him." Kyle is completely taken off guard, and storms off to talk to Liz.

At the hospital, Kyle tells Liz that he had nothing to do with his friends beating up Max. Liz is hurt, and cannot believe that Kyle's friends would beat up Max, "who is the last person in the world who'd want to hurt anyone." Kyle becomes angry that she can only think of Max, and finally, Liz just tells Kyle that she doesn't think they should be together anymore. Kyle immediately blames Max, and tells Liz that he is trouble, and that his "dad has got an eye on him."

When Liz comes back in, she tells her parents to go get some air, and that she can stay with the grandmother. As she sits with her, she tries to talk with her. Max shows up then. She has hope for a second, but Max dispells it, telling her that he can't stop death, but that perhaps he can help her say goodbye. He puts his hands on her grandmother's arm and concentrates; he strains to wake her up, but nothing works. "I'm sorry," he can only say. Liz sees her grandmother's ghost!

Suddenly, Liz hears her grandmother's voice behind her. She turns to see her spirit standing vibrantly; Liz tells her how grateful she has been and also promises to follow and trust her heart. Soon after, Liz hears the sound of the heart monitor flatten into a single tone, and she knows that her grandmother has died.

For some reason, Max drives her home. We hear her narration tell us about one's heart leading to different places, scary places, and even places that can never end in happiness. With tears streaming down her cheeks, Liz thanks Max, and turns to walk slowly toward her front door.

She turns back to face Max, though, and walks quickly to embrace him. As they hug, we near Liz narrating finally, "But that's not the difficult part. The difficult part is that you leave normal, ...and you can never go back."
