ROSWELL

Season 1, Episode 5: Missing

*This episode summary contains spoilers.

Imagine a dark, cold alley. Footsteps. Liz keeps looking behind her, but there is no one. There never is. She walks faster and faster, and ends up running home, to her family's apartment above the Crashdown Cafe.

When Liz gets home, she sighs with relief... but not for long. She immediately reaches for her diary, but it isn't where she usually puts it. A worried look appears on her face.

Liz rushes to Maria's house, and tells her the problem. The two begin to worry about the aliens' secret getting out. "I wrote everything in that journal," Liz says. (She calls it a journal, since she wants to be a scientist, and scientists don't keep diaries, they keep journals.)

Over at Michael's house, he has just woken up in a frenzy. He frantically searches for pencil and pad, and begins to draw his latest dream.

A knock on Max's window wakes him. It's Michael. He shows Max his drawing, which Max describes as a "semi-circle." While Max remains somewhat uninterested, Michael can't seem to stop walking around.

At school the next day, Maria and Liz try to "reconstruct the crime." While Maria is figuring a motive and suspect, Liz reassures herself that the diary was just misplaced.

Liz is most worried about how to tell Max that her diary is missing. She finds him at the snack machine, and begins to lead into her story. But before she can get to the "missing diary" part, Michael walks up, and quite harshly cuts off their conversation.

Later that day, Liz sits in a dark classroom, alone. The guidance counselor, Ms. Depolski finds her there, and gently asks about any problems. "I'm not only a guidance counselor... I'm also a friend." Not only is this sappy, but it's suspicious.

Fueled by her investigative instincts, Maria confronts Alex about the diary. Alex, who is already feeling left out, is only hurt by this.

Again, Depolski shows up when Alex is banging on his locker in frustration. She asks to talk to him in her office, and he begins to mention his problems with Maria and Liz, as well as the missing diary. Depolski becomes even more suspicious when right after Alex leaves, she calls someone, asking for "back-up."

In art class, the teacher is surprised to see Michael walk in. Michael breaks his usual regimen of skipping classes, saying that "he just feels like drawing." Instead of gesturing the figure everyone else is, he begins to draw the image in his dreams.

At the UFO musuem, Max is shelving books in the back. His boss recommends a few books, and Max takes an interest in a particular one, "Among Us." Liz suddenly shows up then, and tells Max about the missing diary. As Max begins to worry, Liz begins to regret telling him. She reassures him that she will find it.

At home, Liz searches frantically for her diary. When her mother walks in, she suddenly becomes suspicious of her. Liz realizes that she really thinks that someone has taken the diary, but has been denying it all along.

At the Crashdown Cafe, the "Czechs" hang out: Michael is doodling his dome, Max is reading "Among Us," and Isabelle is only getting more worried about people noticing their strange behavior. At that moment, Kyle and his friends walk in. He stops by their table, and stares at Max. "I'm on to you, Evans," he says, with a quiet ferocity.

Next scene: Max is convinced that Kyle has stolen Liz's diary, and now he is really worried. Liz refuses to believe it... until Max touches a CD in her room, and he sees a flash of images: Kyle, in Liz's room, picking up the CD, then looking around.

At school, Michael is still working on his painting. He has moved from charcoal to oil paint, and it is really starting to look like a work of art (something resembling cubism--abstract rather than an image of a dome).

Meanwhile, Liz confronts Kyle while he is playing basketball. She hints at the missing diary, but he doesn't admit to anything; he only gets mad.

The next day, paintings and projects from the art class are displayed in an art gallery in the hall (hey, I didn't write the script). Michael's painting is the teacher's prize posession, but Max and Isabelle are worried about exposure.

And the truth about Depolski is revealed. She and two other men walk behind an unknown building (in the middle of nowhere), and she discusses the case, including the names of Liz and Max.

At Kyle's house, Liz and Max find the door open. Though Liz objects, Max's worries have increased, and he charges in. As they search Kyle's room, a strange figure can be seen passing through the hallways. When Max hears a noise, he begins to look for the stranger. Just then, Kyle drives up, and the two hurriedly get out of the house. As they pass by the bushes by the Valenti's driveway, a figure can be seen.

The next day at school, in art class, the teacher is trying to convince Michael to draw something other than the dome. He mentions the "geodesic dome" as the subject of his drawings, and Michael then realizes what it is (before, it had only been an image he had been trying to recopy onto paper).

During lunch, Max slowly tells Isabelle and Michael about the missing diary. The two sigh, but don't seem too surprised. Isabelle looks worried, but Michael looks mad.

That night, at the Crashdown Cafe, Liz is cleaning up inside. Michael walks in, his eyes narrowed. He towers over Liz, and Liz is obviously afraid. He tells her that Max has told him about the missing diary, and Liz becomes even more afraid. And then, Michael begins to retell a different story. "You have to know who your friends are... so I had to know what your journal said." He then pulls the diary out of his back pocket, and returns it.

Liz is relieved, and Michael finally smiles. "It's good to know we have friends." He adds, "And thank you, for giving me one more reason to envy Max Evans."

After work, Liz stops by the UFO musuem. She tells him that a "customer" returned her journal after finding it, and Max breathes a sigh of relief. Here, she begins to tell Max about the content of her diary. "What I wrote in my journal... it didn't really have anything to do with science. That day that you saved me, I felt something I just had to put into words... so years from now, if anyone ever touches me, I'll know what it's supposed to feel like." (*Note: Did anyone else hear that strange voice that played for about a second in the middle of this quote?? It was scary.)

At lunch the next day, Max is still reading "Among Us." He tells a relieved Isabelle about the returned diary, and Michael smiles to himself, when he hears Max tell them that Liz would only say "a friend returned it."

As Max and Michael get up to get something else to eat, Isabelle flips through Max's book for a second, before putting it down. The back book flap lays open, and she calls Max and Michael back over. On the back flap is an image of the author, with a large geodesic dome behind him, like the one in Michael's drawings.

The episode ends with Liz finishing another entry in her diary. She comments that as her small-town-girl wishes of something exciting came true, so did many more problems. She closes the journal, satisfied, and hides it in a new place, behind a loose brick in her wall.
