Welcome.
Death has been portrayed as an individual entity in thousands of different cultures, in profoundly different ways. This page will focus mainly on the tall gaunt fellow with the scythe, which itself has many variations. Why the Reaper? Because of my NAME! Theresa is supposedly from an island in Greece (like Thessaly), originated from the word meaning "Harvest," i.e. "to Reap". With that in combination with my quasi-goth aspirations in high school (and for it making a fairly simple halloween costume on a budget), the Grim Reaper archetype has had a special place in my heart. Sometimes credited as: Angel of Death, Soul Collector, Azrael, Reaper of Souls, or just plain Death. A much maligned and romanticized figure, depicted as a misunderstood, neutral messenger. Some cultures depict Death as an elderly woman ("Grandmother Death"). Neil Gaiman informs us in one of his Sandman graphic novels that Death has been depicted as a young woman so beautiful that your life was drawn out through your eyes. I hope to add some brief analyzation of the significance of scythes, skeletons, cowls, veils, swords, pale horses, ravens, hourglasses/clocks, books/scrolls, other elements associated with the death image.
