Chapter 8
Come Josephine

Jack and Rose stumbled out of the small entrance to the noisy dance hall. They were in their own little world just laughing and singing familiar tunes together. They continued to walk down the deserted sidewalk back to their neighborhood, back to reality. They were oblivious to the fact that the streets were filled with no one but themselves, lit only by the gas lamps lining the street. They didn't notice how the shades were drawn in every house with their lights off, and the peaceful quietness surrounding them.

"Hey, do you remember that song….what was it called now…something Josephine…." Jack said as he searched his memory for any tidbits of information that it could find.

"Oh yes….what was it? Come Josephine in my flying machine…."

Jack smiled as he remembered the familiar tune. He finished the sentence for Rose. "…In my flying machine, going up she goes, up she goes…yeah that’s the one. I remember singing that to my little sister before she…died in the fire." Jack's smile suddenly vanished as flashbacks of horrible memories ran freely throughout his mind.

Rose's smile faded as well as thoughts drifted in and out of her father. "It's a horrible thing…to lose someone you love very much."

Jack looked over at Rose, not even expecting such a comment. He nodded his head in understanding. "Yes it is. But like they say, life goes on. I know my family wouldn't want me living my life just like every day was just like the last one. I know that they want me to make each day count, if not for me, for them... for the life they never got to live."

Rose smiled at Jack's heartwarming remembrance. Unfortunetely they were already in front of Rose's house. Rose sighed as they stopped by the gate. "Well you definitely made today count for me Jack, you really did. Thank you for being so kind to me. I almost feel like I have to repay you for such a wonderful day."

Jack looked deep into Rose's eyes. "Rose, there's some things that money can't buy. Don't feel that you have to repay me in any way. It was my pleasure."

"Thank you Jack." Reluctantly, Rose turned towards her the big steps leading her to her home. Jack gently touched her arm.

"Rose?" She turned around.

"What is it Jack?"

Jack bit his lip. "Would you mind very much if I stop by sometime tomorrow? I'd really like to see you again."

Rose smiled as she looked at Jack's almost nervous features. "Of course not Jack. I would love to see you again tomorrow. Perhaps you could even bring some of that artwork that you were telling me about earlier."

Jack smiled in relief. "Of course. I'll see you then Rose. Goodbye Rose. Sleep well."

"I know I will tonight. Goodnight Jack. See you tomorrow."
