Chapter 7: Reconsidering?
John slammed his bedroom door with all his might. He started going throughout his room, kicking any objects standing in his way. Anger and hate raged throughout his body.
John had just finished dinner. He had told his parents about his engagement to Emily. Emelia's reaction was a slight frown, not knowing why her husband was acting so absurdly. Cal on the other hand, was having an absolute fit. John just sat dumbfounded. Why was he getting this kind of a reaction? He had later gotten into a huge argument with his father. That's where he found out just WHO Emily Dawson really was and who her parents really were. Quite frankly, he didn't care. His mind was set. He was going to marry Emily even if it meant eloping.
John curled up onto his bed, crying. That's when one of John's long time companions walked in. Before him stood a girl not much older than himself. Her name was Emma Longstreet. She had been working for the Hockleys since she was 8 years old and since then, had developed a strong friendship with John. She had taken care of John when he was sick or whenever his parents were away on trips to far off countries. But most of all, she came to him whenever he need comfort or support.
John stood up and the two shared a comforting hug as John cried. Emily patted him on the back and they sat back down on the bed.
"It's ok John. I…heard what happened."
"Oh Emma…I don't know what to do. What AM I supposed to do?"
"Well… the best advice that I can give you may not always be the wisest, but I think you should follow what your heart is telling you to do. It knows best. Whenever you have doubt about something or don't know what to do, you may feel alone…like no one in the world could help you, but all you have to do is turn to your heart. It will tell you the answers."
"Oh Emma! Thank you…but I'm afraid you're right. My heart's telling me to stay with Emily. I know that things won't be too good between our parents though. I'm just afraid that something might happen…"
"John?"
"Yes?"
"Listen to what you're heart is sayin'. It wasn't Emily's fault that your parents don't get along with hers. She just happened to be born into that family. That's all. You can't punish her for something she had no part in. Nor can you punish yourself."
John nodded in understanding, wiping the tears away. "Thank you Emma. You've been such a wonderful friend to me."
"Hey, that's what I'm here for. Now cheer up. I hear there's going to be a new bright and sunny day tomorrow and you'll not want to miss it by staying so gloomy." She said, gently giving him one last hug before disappearing down the hall.
John looked up at his clock later that night. "10:35" he read. "So it's about 7:30 in California. I'd better call Emily to see how she's doing."
John walked out into the hallway and into the library. He closed the door behind him then sat down at the desk. He picked up the receiver off the phone.
"Operator…yes, I'd like to make a long distance call to Santa Monica, California. Dawson residence. Thank you…."
Emily picked up the phone. "Hello?"
"Hello Emily?"
"Is that you John?"
"Yeah, look…I really need to talk to you. Are you somewhere kinda private?"
Emily glanced around the loft area at the top of the stairs. "Yes…why?"
"Well, I just told my parents at dinner…about three hours ago."
"I just told mine not too long ago. How did yours react? I'm just curious."
"Well, to tell you the truth…not good. You do know why now don't you?"
"Yes, I just heard the whole story tonight…after my mother passed out, that is."
"Oh gosh Emily. What are we going to do?"
"I really don't know. But I know one things for certain."
"What's that?" John asked, slightly nervous that she'd say she didn't want to marry him anymore.
"John, I don't care about our parents to tell you the truth. All that I care about is you. I love you John. I'm not going to leave you just because they can't get along."
John sighed with relief. "Oh Emily! You don't know how much I've wanted you to say that!"
"But John…our parents will have to meet again sooner or later."
"Yeah, I guess that's the next biggest problem."
"Let's just get it over with John."
"Alright…if you want to. When?"
"Well, I'm only staying one week…then I'm coming back home. Why don't I just bring my family back with me?"
"Ok…that's sounds good. Look, I'll have to talk to you another time. My father's coming down the hallway."
"That's fine. Bye John. Take care."
"You too. I love you."
"I love you too. Bye."
