Growing up in the
1980s made for some interesting experiences. The hot new programs for
keeping kids off of drugs and out of street gangs included Just Say No!
Club, public-service announcements with attitude like McGruff (sans
Scruff, who wasn't thought up yet) and the infamous "This is your
brain on drugs" egg-frying circus. The key part of the effort,
though, was Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or D.A.R.E. for short.
D.A.R.E. (acronyms still had to have periods in them in those days) has
the cops come to your school to talk to you about staying away from
mind-altering substances. This would usually involve getting out of health
class, which was fine since most of us knew how to wash our asses already
(except "Stinky Matt"). There were some problems with the
program back then, though, most notably dopeyness. Let us take a
trip then, into the world of Gordon in D.A.R.E. at Glendenning Elementary
during the 1988-89 school year. Click on the cover to begin the adventure! |
