Poor Skuld. She tries so hard at everything she does. Still a young
Goddess-in-training, Skuld has the arduous task of being the System Debugger
of Yggdrasil, the World Tree (or Mega-Supercomputer of Heaven, as I like
to call it.) while balancing her job of being the Goddess of the Future
as well. Fiery and energetic, Skuld has all the energy of a spritely young
little girl.
(I'm NOT a young little girl! Neo Skuld Cluster-Bomb attack! -Skuld)
Erm.... we also see that she has a temper to match that of her age.
Actually, she's not all that bad....
As the Goddess of the Future, Skuld has quite some knowledge in all things to do with the technological future, such as designing and building a bipedal walking robot she named Banpei-kun. She's also able to create nifty stuff such as a bug catching machine from a rice cooker (although I wonder how they're going to cook their rice now if Keiichi can't afford another one. ^_^U) which comes in handy once in a while when the bugs start to cause trouble. She also packs lots of high-yield, compact bombs and a multi-purpose hammer with her. Apparently, since she's still a beginner Goddess, she hasn't mastered the uses of her Goddess powers and only knows a few basic things required of her. Of course, being young, she represents to us an uncertain, but hopeful future.
Being a Goddess doesn't mean Skuld has to be an infinitely, all powerful being capable of destroying the world if she so wished. Instead, Skuld's a young, perky little Goddess who adores her older sister, Belldandy, and uses her as an example for her own growing up. She learns much of her lessons from Belldandy as well as through her own experiences. Her powers are still undeveloped as yet, such as her inability to control which body of water she will teleport through when travelling somewhere, although she shows some fledgeling abilities with her other powers, such as word-marking (heh) and telekineses, among her other abilities. She relies heavily upon mechanical objects to help her to the jobs she is required to do through her own powers and abilities as a Megami, mostly because she's unable to use her powers. Belldandy is currently in the process of teaching Skuld the value of doing things under her own power and not to rely on others so often.
Her quarrels with Urd are also as common as her tinkering with mechanical objects. Although the two seem to be unable to get along with each other, it's probably because they have little understanding of the other's feelings and preferences to which Skuld would probably be willing to try to understand if given the chance. Skuld truly does love her sisters as with Urd, but maybe it's just a difference in their interests which keep them apart. Skuld also does her best to outdo her oldest sister in anything she can, just to prove she's as good if not better a Goddess as Urd. as mentioned before. Skuld always seems anxious to grow up in the manga, probably because she wants her respect faster. And although she appears to be easily angered, it's only because she wants the respect she feels is rightfully hers for being a Megami. Perhaps she feels she's being treated unfairly just because she looks young.
And like any another young woman (There, happy Skuld-sama?), Skuld is still inexperienced in many things, which could be a reason why she acts the way she acts; Because she doesn't understand what's going on. However, as she still has quite a way to go, Skuld will have many, many opportunities to learn these things and understand. Her fear that Belldandy won't love her anymore once she has Keiichi will probably be one of the first things that will go. But other than that, Skuld's like any other perky little woman (Still happy, Skuld-sama?) who's still learning about the enjoyable little things in life such as learning to do something new and finding a first love. ^_^ Let's wish her luck!
Observational notes on Skuld's Goddess designation
in relation to the Real World : Goddess of the Future.
Note : Reading of the manga up to book 14 (optimally 15) is required
to understand some of what is written here.
The "Future" is what we all generally define as a time which is somewhere
near our "Present" although not immediately, or as a radical improvement
or change in something in time, no matter what. However, the "Future" is
just what makes up the "Present", no matter when. Such as when you read
the word after this word, you are making up the "Future" (no matter whether
it is the immediate "Future" or distant "Future"), have just made the "Present"
(See Belldandy's Profile), and are
creating a "Past" (See Urd's Profile) for
yourself by having consigned yourself to reading this passage. It is one
of the broadest zones of time to define, because it is the one with limitless
potential for possibilities as the Future is eternally young, and anything
can happen to the young. Consider a child's upbringing and see for yourself.
By even considering going on to Skuld's definition, you are making a Future
for yourself.
"Ladder Tunnel Theory" :
Think of the "Future" as a moving "ladder" shaped tunnel in which you
are floating in the space inside only one side of the ladder, armed with
a paint can. You can't see clearly what's ahead of you, but you are nontheless
given a chance to chance a plan for it. However, others also exist in the
"Tunnel" and they have their own paintings to do, which will affect the
planned pattern you might be able to "paint", adding on to the current
pattern or painting your own bit in an empty space so that it can move
on into the "Present", in turn affecting the "Future" you might have next
time. Sometimes the portion of the "Present" you paint will come back in
a loop through the "ladder" so you can paint it again, sometimes it won't.
Once your paint runs out, you have no "Future" left, meaning Death.
As we all know, Skuld is capable of incredible technological feats.
In comparison to the real world, we base our future and advancement in
terms of technology as well. Take the past for instance, where the now
all too common car would have been considered the pinnacle of human technology
then. Humans still consider their future and achievements in terms of technology,
as does Skuld, who currently relies on technology. And whenever she comes
up with something new, she spends some time admiring it, as we do. However,
we can't always rely on technology to advance human life. A gracious social
code is essential, and as we see in the Goddess of the Future, she is just
beginning to develop her own way of thinking towards that end.
Because, if humans rely solely on technological aspects to "advance"
ourselves, we will never see our true potential. Skuld, whose powers are
only developing, has to learn that she can not rely on technology forever,
as can't humans. She has to learn the value of human emotion and other
virtues (such as love, trust, belief, and confidence in oneself and not
just machines), only then can Skuld continue to develop her potential.
Always relying on the Present to shape itself, and always being influenced
by the Past, the Future is somewhat unpredictable, like Skuld. However,
through the influence of both timelines, especially in the Present which
is always now, certain parts of the future can be shaped. Seeing Skuld
say that she likes Belldandy more than Urd and seeks her for help is a
show of how the Future's reliance on the Present to continue existence
also shows it ways to improve itself, and the Present's requirement that
the Future exist for itself to exist. Also, Skuld's declaration to follow
Belldandy is proof of that whatever the Present may do, the Future is affected
in some way, however small.
The Past also has its own unique role in developing the Future, however.
For example, Skuld mistrusts Urd's medicines and potions. Following this
line of thought, those of us who live in the "Present", which is the Past's
"Future", might find old methods comparatively unreliable or else are unwilling
to try such outdated techniques simply because we think we are too advanced
for them and must rely on more "reliable" current techniques, or the "Past's"
"Futuristic" techniques, as per Skuld's thinking. Another comparison is
that we in the "Past's" "Future" might find some ideas ideal in the Past
as totally radical and unacceptable in the "Future", the way Skuld dislikes
Urd's personality.
However, Skuld and Urd help each other too, because sometimes a fusion
between the Past and Future is the only way to get things done. And despite
their lack of co-operation sometimes, they cannot exist without each other
because there would be no Future without the Past and vice versa, but requiring
the Present as a go-between. (Remember Skuld and Urd normally try to make
up to each other and truly love each other despite their outward appearances,
and that Belldandy is normally involved in this healing.)
The Future represents an era of learning for all of us, for Man is
still learning even as this passage exists in the Present. Taking the "Ladder
Tunnel" theory back into view, eventually the painters will find something
new appearing in their perpetually moving tunnel and learn to paint new
patterns. If you want, take Skuld's learning to ride a bicycle with Sentaro's
help as the example. She not only learns something new, she discovers another
step into her social evolution. A result of the Present. Her lack of understanding
of a bicycle's scratches (which record its Past) means the Future's ignorance
to the Past's significance, and a hope for a new Past (and Present) with
every new scratch gained with the Future's newly acquired knowledge. Man
will eventually learn everything, but only through much trial, error, and
pain. But it's worth it. Skuld certainly learned that lesson.
