JIMI HENDRIX

HISTORY

Jimi was born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942 in Seattle, Washington.  His name was later changed to James Marshall Hendrix by his father.  The eldest of 4 children Jimi taught himself guitar at a young age and joined his first band "The Velvetones" in '58.  Jimi makes his live debut with "The Rocking Kings" in 1959.

After leaving high school without graduating Jimi enlists in the US Army where he serves as a parachute jumper until he's injured and gets discharged in '62.

After performing in numerous bands with people such as Little Richard Jimi signs a 2 year contract with Sue Records in New York in '65 only to sign another recording deal with PPX Records that same year.

Jimi drifts again for a couple of years until 1966  he starts his own band, "The Jimi Hendrix Experience", with Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell.  The band releases a number of singles such as 'Hey Joe' and 'Purple Haze' and in 1967 they release their first album "Are You Experienced?"  All this allows them to shoot to fame and sees them touring with the likes of the Monkees.  That same year they release a second album "Axis: Bold As Love" and follow it up the next year with "The Electric Ladyland".

After numerous gigs Jimi replaces Noel Redding with Billy Cox in '69 and with Larry Lee, Juma Sultan and Jerry Velez heads to Woodstock with the new name "Gypsy Sons & Rainbows Band".  Later that year when Mitch Mitchell leaves to work on a solo project Jimi again renames the group to "The Band Of Gypsys" which has Billy Cox, Juma Sultan and Buddy Miles.

They record a performance in New York which becomes their self titled album however early in '70 the line-up disbands and Hendrix, Mitchell and Redding reform again under "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" however they never perform and record together.  Instead Hendrix, Mitchell and Cox form the "Cry Of Love Band" and head into the studio to record a double album entitled "The First Rays Of The New Rising Sun".

On the 18th September 1970 Jimi is found unconscious in the Samarkand Hotel in London after vomiting in his sleep and is pronounced head at the St. Mary Abbot's Hospital.   James Marshall Hendrix is buried in Greenwood Cemetary, Renton, Seattle.
