PINK FLOYD
HISTORY
Formed as a school band in 1964 by Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, it wasn't until Syd Barrett joined later that year that Pink Floyd (named after two blues men) really took off. Barrett penned most of the early work but departed with drug problems in 1968 only to be replaced by David Gilmour.
After Barrett departed Waters took over the song writing duties and in 1971 Pink Floyd released "Meddle" and followed it with "Dark Side Of The Moon" just two years later which received both critical and public acclaim solidifying not only Pink Floyd but also Alan Parsons who engineered the album. Pink Floyd went from strength to strength releasing "Wish You Were Here" in 1975 which paid tribute to Barett and "Animals" in '77.
However it is probably their 1979 album "The Wall" that Pink Floyd are best know for. Pink Floyd took the concept on during touring building a wall between themselves and the audience. This album also spawned a movie starring Bob Geldof.
1982 say the departure of Wright due to conflicts with Waters, who also left soon after due to conflicts with Gilmour. 1984 saw the various members of Pink Floyd embark on solo careers however Mason and Gilmour soon decided to continue Pink Floyd and with Wright released "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" in 1987.
The 90's saw Pink Floyd release another chart topping album "The Division Bell" as well as a live double cd "Pulse".
