I Went Down's Music

Dario Marianelli, the Pisa-born, London-based composer, wrote the soundtrack to I Went Down. Starting off with a very modern R&B flavour, the music evolved as Paddy Breathnach's idea of the film did. After many sleepless nights and rewrites, the obvious choice of guitar and harmonica as the "soul of the soundtrack" became obvious and the sound was shaped and paced with the action of the movie. The final recording session was on St-Patrick's day of 1997, and as Marianelli says: "It's a funny feeling, to look at the little cassette with the final mixed tracks. It contains months of work, and discussions, and sweat, and telephone calls, and ideas, and all the rest that make a film soundtrack. It's so small, it rests in my hand now." (from the I Went Down soundtrack CD liner notes).
