BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE PG-13 Starring Martin Lawrence, Nia Long, and Paul Giamatti
Eric says: ***** (5) As middle of the road as they come. Nothing horrible. Nothing great. An ideal movie if you have a couple of hours to kill. BMH tells the story of what would happen if you pretended to be an obease older woman, and end up falling in love with her granddaughter while trying to catch an escaped convict. A classic story, to say the least. Martin Lawrence is an agent intent on tracking down a con. Within the parameters of the story, he must "become" the con's girlfriend's grandma. The rest of the film involves Martin running around in a fat suit, while trying to hide his affection for the woman. Apparently, while working on their movie Life together, Martin hoped that he and Eddie Murphy would be regularly mistaken for each other, as we've seen this before and willsoon again in the Nutty Professor movies. Giamatti adds the normal uncool-guy comic relief. ****I just realized how much I hate writing about the comic relief guy. All movies have them. Can we please assassinate any and all further comic relief actors now, please. No more standard sidekicks, stoner neighbors, rough-talking police lieutenants, guys carrying panes of glass across the streets, cars being turned into convertibles once they crash into truck trailers, good guys making promises that we know they'll definitely keep... When will Hollywood just be fresh? When will we demand it of them! As long as we allow ourselves to consume this interchangeable garbage, they'll continue to create it. Where are our standards as a society?**** So see Big Momma's House if you'd like. It makes no difference. It's not that funny, not atall fresh, and Martin Lawrence got paid more to star in it than I may make in 10 years. Enjoy the show. |
