DOGMA R Starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Chris Rock, and George Carlin
Eric says: ?????????? (?) I haven't seen it yet.
David says:**********(8/10) A must - see movie for anyone who takes their religion too seriously, or allows the Church (any church) to rule their lives in an unproductive manner. If memory serves* (I can't go look it up quick & easy 'cause I lent that perticular book to a friend and never got it back - argh), Norse mythology (religion to the Vikings) states that the lord of the Gods, Odin, took the mischeivious demi-God / imp / some form of magical creature Loki as an adoptive son, and promised to protect him against the other Gods. A time would come when Loki would do a deed so heinous that Odin would be forced to break his promise, forcing Armeggedon. The fact that this film mixes at least 3 religions^ (note to self - track down Voice of God...) is a subtle underpinning to one of the movies messages - it reallydoesn't matter what shurh / religion you beleive in, so long as you 1) beleive in something greater that yourself, 2) don't go around killing people in the name of that beleif (which usually states that going around killing people is a wee bit of a no-no), and 3)while beleiving in that something, just remeber that all the people telling you what that something is are all flawed humans, who can't be trusted to accurately portray the Word of God, the Sex of God, or any other Facet of God.
* if any of you dear readers knows more of these legends, feel free to send an e-mail. non-dear readers, unpleasnt readers, and illiterates - stay away:) ^ Roman Catholisism / Judaism conglomerate, Norse Mythology (Loki), Greek Mythology (the Muses)
Disclaimer - It should be noted that the major difference between mythology & religion is whether or not you follow the mythologies teachicngs as religious practices. |
