UNITED ARTISTS EMERY BAY 10 6330 Christie Street Emeryville, CA 94608 (510) 420-0107
Location, Location, Location: Available immediately off of 80, UAEB is easy for anyone to get to. And if you don't have a car, AC Transit has a handful of buses that stop in the area, it's easily accessible via side streets to walk to if you're close enough, and you can even take the train as the Emeryville AmTrak station is only a couple hundred yards away.
You Got the Look: Palm trees line the parking lot and surrounding area. At night when the lights are on, there's definitely a retro feel to the neon stripes and swoops. Once inside, it's the traditional big lobby with no particular feel to it. Movie theatres line the outside all around, the two to the farthest to either side feeling small enough to fit in most 2-car garages, while all the others are good-sized with relatively comfy chairs (most of them don't squeak).
Park It Right Here, Baby: There's a large parking lot in front, but it is shared by the Food Court and a couple of other stores opposite the theatre. Side streets line one side and the rear while another side is taken up by the main thoroughfare street to navigate the big Emeryville shopping complex. Every now and then, though, you can sneak into the spots on the left of the theatre because they are slightly hidden from the main traffic that leads from 80.
Show Me the Money: Matinee prices, good for showings before 6pm every day, are $5 for adults and evening and night shows are $8. Of course, popcorn, soda, and candy is grossly overpriced. When we do our jobs to see the movies for our public, a large popcorn and 2 large sodas is around $11.
Extras, Extras, Read All About Them: *Update 1/14/2000* A nice new offer is reusable beverage cups and popcorn tubs that you can purchase for $5 each and then have refilled all year long for $1 each. I am saddened to report that while prices seem the same, the large popcorn has shrunk! Also, the cup holders placed on the seats a couple of years ago have disappeared. The men's bathroom does have a nice handicapped stall, though, complete with sink and mirror. An entire night can be planned with the International Food Court just across the way, along with a fun pool hall,The Broken Rack, a video arcade, and, for you intellectuals, a great Borders Books and Music. As an added bonus, there's a candy store in the food court where, if you like living on the edge (and of course, we never do this and don't suggest it at all), it may be possible to sneak in tastier, cheaper snacks.
