TAMMI TERRELL Back To The Top Back To The Top
FOR YOUR INFO: *Although 'The Onion Song' is attributed to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, the female vocal was actually done by Valerie Simpson. Motown had convinced Marvin that releasing the songs under the successful pairing of 'Marvin and Tammi' would only benefit Tammi (who was no longer able to record), and her family. Marvin felt "guilty" about deceiving the public but he agreed to Motown's decision because it would provide extra cash for her care. The other hit record which features Simpson's voice but credited to Terrell is "What You Gave Me." It's been rumored that David Ruffin, was responsible for Tammi's death due to his constant battering of his girlfriend. Speculations varies, according to Martha Reeves in her autobiography, James Brown, not David, was responsible. But according to the chapter about Tammi in the Women of Motown book, doctors denied any connection between brain cancer & any kind of injury. Tammi's younger sister, Ludie Montgomery is now writing a biography of the woman who was Tommy to her, Tammi to us.
