(*repeat) My mind and soul have felt like this.  since love between us no longer exists.  And each time that darkness falls, it finds me alone with these four walls (*repeat and fade).

COMPLETE MOTOWN ANTHOLOGY, THE (2:51)

Through the mirror of my mind, time after time.  I see reflections of you and me.  *Reflections of, the way it used to be Reflections of the love you took from me.  Oh I'm all alone now, no love to share in me.  Trapped in a world that's a distorted reality.  Happiness you took from me.  And left me alone.  With only memories.  Through the mirror of my mind.  Through these tears that I'm crying, Reflects the hurt I can't control.  'Cause although you gone  I keep holding on, to those happy times, ooo when you were mine.  As I peer through the window of lost time, looking over my yesterdays...and all the love I gave.  All is real; all the love that I wasted, all the tears, that I tasted, all again.    Through the hollow of my tears I see a dream that lost From hurt that you've caused.  Everywhere I turn.  Seems like everything i see reflects a love that used to be.  In you I placed All my faith and trust.  Right before my eyes, my world has turned to dust.  I feel all those nights, I sat alone and wept.  Just a hand full of promises are all that's left of loving you. (*repeat) (**repeat)

(Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson) Produced by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson (Jobete Music Co., Inc/ASCAP) Recorded April 15, 1968, Detroit. (Motown 1126, #30)

Available on:

It's the same routine of getting up every morning...And putting on a smile.  But underneath there's another person, Who can't find a reason to make living worthwhile.  Oh, another day to get through, without the love that once was mine.  Sometimes I think my heartaches come to an end and then something brings them all back again...Like wanting you, and not having you, I never get used to.  I've gotten used to not listening for familiar sounds you used to make and now I'm trying to get out of the habit of calling your name first thing when I awake, look here.  It's like a child's first step, I have to learn to walk all, all over again.  'Cause you were always there if I should fall, and now there's nobody else that I can call, it's like wanting you, and not having you, I'll never get used to.  Lost in a crowd, I think I caught a glimpse of you.  Gladly I rushed to touch your hand, ha! To discover it's my mind playing tricks on me again.  Some things you never get used to...

Sometimes I think my heartaches come to an end, And then something brings them all back again, like wanting you, and not having you, I never get used to.  Babe, baby it's wanting you, and not having you I never get used to, Looky here, oh I'm wanting you, and not having you I never get used to...

Someday We'll Be Together (11/69) (#1 - 1 week)

(Jackie Beavers, Johnny Bristol, Harvey Fuqua) Produced by Johnny Bristol. Recorded June 1969, Detroit. (Motown 1156)

 Reviews

The song that is most identified as the group's farewell performance was actually recorded nine years earlier by Johnny Bristol with his group, the Tri-Phi.  Even in it's last reincarnation, the song's history was such that its rise to the top makes it more amazing.  Diana Ross, from all accounts, didn't want to record the song; she was coaxed into singing it by Berry Gordy who asked the song's writer to help "guide" Diana through the song.  Unknowingly to both artists, Berry recorded their "demo" and decided to use it in the final release (a scene in the cult movie hit 'Sparkle' was inspired by this).  Another factor was the Supremes, Mary and Cindy, were not used in the recording session.  Instead, the Waters (Maxine & Julia) were called in to help with the background vocals.  The RIAA later acredited Diana Ross with the song (along with 'Love Child') raising Diana's solo #1 hits from 6 to 8.  The most infamous incident concerning 'Someday..' was during the taping of the reunion of Diana Ross & the Supremes for the Motown 25 special which resulted in Smoky Robinson inviting the night's performers to the stage, to join the Supremes for the show's finale.

(Brian Holland, Lamont  Dozier, Eddie Holland, Jr.) Produced by Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier. Recorded january 5, 1965, Detroit.  (Motown 1074)

Also sung by Kim Weston, Shalamar (Uptown Festival)

Availble on:

Stop! In the name of love, before you break my heart.

Baby, baby, I'm aware of where you go, each time you leave my door

I watch you walk down the street.  Knowing your other love you'll meet.

But this time before you run to her, leavin' me alone and hurt.

*(Think it over) After (Haven't) I've been good to you.

(Think it over) After (Haven't) I've been sweet to you.

Stop!  In the name of love, before you break my heart.

Stop! in the name of love, before you break my heart.

Think it over, think it over.

I've known of your, your secluded nights.  I've even seen her, maybe once or twice.

But is her sweet expression worth more than my loving affection.

This time before you leave my arms.  And rush off to her charms.

(*repeat)

I've tried so hard, hard to be patient.  Hoping you'll stop this infatuation.

But each time you are together, I'm so afraid of losing you forever

Stop! in the name of love, before you break my heart...think it over, baby...

Stop! In the name of love, before you break my heart (you better think it over)

Ooh, think about me baby

He gave me the eye, but I just passed him by.  I treated him unkind but he didn't seem to mind.  I told him be on his way.  But not a word did he say.  He just stood there kind of bold.  While I acted cold.  But when the lovelight starts shing through his eyes; made me realize, I should apologize.  And when he placed a kiss upon my face, then I knew, oh then I knew that he won my heart.  So I quickly apologized, hoping he hadn't changed his mind.  But not a word did he say, So I turned to walk away.  *But when the lovelight starts shing through his eyes.  Made me realize how he felt inside and when he placed a kiss upon my face, **then I knew, oh then I knew that he won my heart.  When he asked could he walk my way, I hoped sweet things he'd say.  Instead he smiled kind of nice as he held my hand kind of tight. Se Il Filo Spezzenai (Italian)

Available on:

Set me free why don't you baby, get out of my life, why don't you baby.  'Cause you don't really love me.  You just keep me hangin' on.  You don't really need me.  But you keep me hangin' on.  Why do you keep a-comin' around.  Playing with my heart.  Why don't you get out of my life and let me make a new start.  Let me get over you the way you've gotten over me.  Hey, set me free.  Why don't you baby, let me be why don't you baby.  'Cause you don't really love me.  You just keep me hangin' on.  Now you don't really want me.  You just keep me hangin' on.  You say although we broke up, you still wanna be just friends.  But how can we still be friends when seeing you only breaks my heart again.  And there ain't nothing I can do about it.  Set me free why don't you baby.  Why don't you baby, set me free.  Why don't you baby get out of my life, why don't you baby.  You claim you still care for me.  But your heart and soul needs to be free.  Now that you've got your freedom you wanna still hold on to me.  You don't want me for yourself.  so let me find somebody else.  Hey, hey, why don't you be a man about it.  And set me free.  Now you don't care a thing about me.  You're just using me.  Go on, get out, get out of my life and let me sleep at night.  Please 'cause you don't really love me.  you just keep me haingin' on.
