Saving Private Ryan

The newest Spielberg flick is next to 'Shakespeare In Love' another entertaining Hollywood blockbuster with no (necessary) depth. It is directed with great technical perfection, especially the first 25 minutes, the landing of allied troops at Omaha Beach in 1944. The perfect camera work by Janusz Kaminski takes the audience directly into the battlefield with the great sound of bullets flying over our heads, yes, it's really stunning, but this is the only thing what is really well done in the movie. After that we have a plain story with a couple of soldiers searching for a lost private called James Ryan and at the end a big showdown between the good Allies and the bad Germans (refer to western movies ;). Of course, we have some nice acting moments of Tom Hanks and the rest of the crew, but that is not enough. If you've seen 'The Thin Red Line' you will probably understand what I mean. "Thin" is a war movie how it should be and by the way also one of the best.

Finally, let me give you a fitting equation: 'Saving Private Ryan' vs. 'The Thin Red Line' = PROSE vs. POETRY.
