Top Films For The Summer - 1997

Here is a list of the films that promise to be the biggest, best or most successful films of this summer. I compiled this list using various sources, but the words are all mine!

(All the links in the following list will either take you to another page on that person/subject, or display a lovely picture for you to enjoy! If you would like to see my old "Top Ten Films For 1997" list then click here! )

  1. Batman and Robin:
This time round sees George Clooney in the title role, with Chris O'Donnell once again playing Robin. Many think that Clooney will make a far more dashing caped crusader than Val Kilmer managed, and the baddies look set to be far more menacing. Arnie Schwarzenegger plays Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman stars as the seductive Poison Ivy who can kill with a single kiss. To help cope with these nasty villans, the writers have given Batman and Robin an extra helper in the form of Batgirl, played by the gorgeous Alicia Silverstone (which I have to say I am looking forward to!) For the obligatory love interest they have decided not to go for an actress, but have instead chosen the lovely Elle Macpherson. Batman certainly likes his women tall! Opens in England on June 27th.

  2. Contact:
If you can't wait for the X-Files movie to come out, then this should do fine as a replacement. Jodie Foster and the rising star Matthew McConaughey are amongst the cast in this story of mankind's first official contact with Alien Life. Adapted from Carl Sagan's novel, this is the more serious film amongst the large number of alien related movies scheduled for release next year.

  3. Hercules:
The latest Disney animated film, this stars the voices of Danny De Vito and James Woods. This adaptation of the popular Greek myth promises to be bright and cheerful in the same mould as Aladdin.

  4. The Lost World:
Or Jurassic Park 2 as it could have ben called. I've read the book, which is absolutely brilliant, but this doesn't mean much as the original film didn't keep to the book at all. Jeff Goldblum continues his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm, the Chaos theorist, and the film is once again directed by Steven Spielberg. Some people are already saying that it won't be any good because it is just a blatant attempt to cash in on the original. However, the effects are bound to be amazing, and many people will go just because they liked the original!

  5. Men In Black:
This one looks prety cool! It stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as two men hired to "save the Earth from the scum of the Universe ". It is yet another alien invasion movie, but is reported to be hilarious, without missing out any of the special effects. Opens in England in July, I believe.

  6. The Fifth Element:
Opening on June 13th in England, this is the new blockbuster starring Bruce Willis. Directed by Luc Besson of "Leon" and "Nikita", this is a futuristic action movie set in the 23rd Century. Willis plays a cab driver caught up in an effort to save the world with the help of the mysterious fifth element herself, played by Milla Jovovich. The obligatory bad guy is played by Gary Oldman. The effects and scenery look amazing, and is worth seeing for these alone, even if the plot is a little confusing at times.

  7. Maximum Risk:
Jean-Claude Van Damme and Natasha Henstridge star in this new film by acclaimed action director Ringo Lam. Jean-Claude plays a character whose twin brother was murdered becasue of his involvement in the criminal underworld. He decides to step into his shoes in order to discover his brothers killers and bring about justice one way or another. There should be plenty of fights, stunts and shoot-outs, if you like that sort of thing, but don't expect too many oscar winning performances. And if you need an added incentive to go and see it, then look no further than the gorgeous Natasha.

  8. Starship Troopers: Bit of a corny name, but this big-budget space film teams Paul Verhoeven with many of the people who worked with him on the successful Robocop movie. Aliens are invading the Earth, and the dialogue is supposed to be very cheesy indeed, but the effects should be spectacular. It stars Michael Ironside and no-body else i've even heard of, but never mind!

So those are my top tips for this summer. Keep your eyes peeled!
