No-Money Woes, Unfunny Foes

Cover to issue 29

As this impecunious episode begins, we find the sisters as broke as my college friends, desperately needing to raise fundage fast! (The IRS are TURDS, btw.) They decide on... the lawn sale!

Meanwhile on Jade, Julia and Theo Diggers are enjoying a nice relaxing week away from the kids. It all goes to pot when Theo's practical-joker mentor, Gneiss, calls telepathically for help. Julia and Theo go off to save the day.

The law sale goes nicely for the kids, with everything you could want from an adventuring super-genius inventor. (My fave is the TIE.) Just don't ask for any armaments. Genn quickly warms up to Seance in a hilarious scene, too. A quick cameo as well from "that quiet little girl with the weirdo uncle from around the way" and her dog. Unfortunately, the sale isn't racking up much moolah (probably because of the great 'deals' being given... 6 Black Lotus, Action Comics #1, and Gucci purses galore.) Luckily, Ace arrives to give Gina an offer she can't refuse.

Theo and Julia pass through hostile territory with little encounter, but face their greatest challenge (even greater than a mid-life crisis or menopause!) when they meet... some Big, Mean, Snarling Guy with Muscles Who Grunts. (They didn't give him a name.) Julia, immune to fear, is scared.

Devil With a Blue Dress, Blue Dress, Blue Dress...

Penny Pincer, Gina rich arch-rival, wants to end the feud between them and knows that this is the best time to do so. But first, a favor. (oh no) Gina has to fill for Penny's cuz' at Taco Hut. (aaaaa) Doing so will get the Diggers out of the poorhouse as well as ending the feud. Gina has no choice.

Meanwhile, the B.M.S.G.w/M.W.G. is kicking the collective hineys of Mr. & Mrs. Diggers.

Everything that can go wrong at the Taco Hut, does. From misspelled nametags (Inga!) to the people you don't want showing up... showing up, Gina and Brit soon discover what Hell is.

Julia and Theo finally defeat the B.M.S.G... you get the hint. Gneiss is freed (and does a bit of 'splainin'.) All is happy there. Sort of.

Penny shows up at the Taco Hut and tries to rub the feud in Gina's face one last time, but an act of kindness changes that. The feud ends, and so does this issue. ^_^

ProseWolf Says:

In my GD beginning, I bought issues 1-4 ($5 CAN total!) and read them. And liked them a lot. Next, I went back to find the most recent issue that shop had. It was this one, #29, the second issue of Gold Digger I'd ever purchased. The jump from the first four issues to this one was amazing. I knew who almost everyone was, and the sheer improvement on art quality shook my foundations. If you look back and compare, you'll understand why I instantly dropped every lame-ass title I was collecting at that moment (Spiderman - ooh, clones...; Cyberforce - nice art but yawn; X-Factor - even Peter David can hold my funnybone for only so long.) I dropped them like a rock, and fell in love with this... world. Thank you, Mr. Perry, once again.

Sorry. ^_^

What a hilarious issue! TIE fighter! HA! Genn's shyness. HA HA!

The battle between the Diggers and the unnamed foe was excellent, too. I spotted elements from Dungeons&Dragons along with various video games (Tekken, SFII...) during it. But it was more based off of Mr. Perry's imagination and ability to create a unique battle scene than anything else.

I loved the cover, and frankly, I don't think I would have picked up this issue had it resembled half of the other covers I've seen on GD. This cover tells a story, and is funny to boot! Great stuff this time 'round.
