This issue begins with a naked woman crawling out of a chamber (a la "The Fly") having no memories. She seems to be a mix of Britanny and Gina. Gina, Brit and Genn are knocked out on the lab floor, and the hybrid tries to recall why she is.
Her memories from the sisters kicks in, and she remembers what happened (in flashback format). The trio got picked up by Ace in Iran, and just managed to get back home alive with their curse still hanging on them. Even on getting home, unpaid bills of all sorts plague them. Genn gave Gina the idea of tricking the curse into leaving them, and Gina set up the experiment.
At this time, the hybrid goes into (a very familiar) Gina's room for clothing and accesses her computer. She then remembers what happened in the lab. Gina did a physical and paraphysical bioscan of herself and Brit, then created protoplasm that exhibited those same characteristics. She tricked the curse into possessing the goop. One massive energy burst later, and...
Gina, Britanny and Genn all awaken with the hybrid in the doorway. She explains that she has the speed, strength, and agility of Britanny. Likewise, she has Gina's intelligence and lust for men. ^_^ Now, she wants to help the sisters to become just like she is, better. If only they'll step into the chambers again...
Genn interrupts by telling them that although the hybrid shows great love for the two girls, she also wants them dead. She cracks Genn upside the head for foiling her plans, and Brit gets ready to pounce. But Gina tries to reason with her. The curse wants the sisters dead, and that's what is influencing the girl. Gina can undo the curse and fix the hybrid.
And just as she is about to relent, Brit thanks Gina for the distraction and a fight breaks out. The woman bolts down the hallway, and much to her surprise, Brit catches up. They scrum and the hybrid trips up Gina, who accidentally takes out Britanny with a stun weapon.
Gina tries to reason with her again, but to no avail. Then the hybrid taunts Gina, telling her to take her best shot. Gina misses but connects with the blast door panel, temporarily separating the two. The hybrid then vows death to the sisters. Her new name is... Grave Digger.
Eh. There wasn't a lot doing in the first half of the comic, just flashbacks. Funny flashbacks, but they still lacked in substance. Then the fighting happened, and all was good.
I'm really trying not to slam this issue, I mean, I can understand why Mr. Perry would want to experiment with this new technique of storytelling. He almost pulls it off, too. As part of the Curse storyline, it's almost essential for setting up the big brawl next issue.
But as an individual comic unto itself, it lacks. Severely. The artwork is sloppy in places (although fantastic for the most part), and the humour level is right up there with all other issues, too. The introduction of the new character, Brianna, is odd compared to what lies in store for her, but Mr. Perry has already stated that he didn't really intend for her to be anything but a villain.
Look. All in all, I must say that this is a fine issue. Not an average issue, nor an excellent issue. But it is classic Gold Digger, and because this issue is a stepping stone for the next issue's slugfest (and we all know how I love a good scrap, ^_^), I can let it slip by. I just hope you can stand it.
