A Short Review of the Garlic Jr. SagaWhat's New

Story Line: The story line isn't very complex compared to the other sagas, and doesn't even totally make sense.  For one thing it's based on the first DBZ movie, "Dead Zone", which is just asking for plot holes.
Also, Gohan's pet dragon, Icharus, appears in this saga, which makes absolutley no sense, considering the fact that Gohan found Icharus in DBZ movie 3, "The Tree of Might", which is one of the movies that could not have actually happened at any point in the series.

New Characters: Well, let's see, all of the new characters are pretty one-dimensional.  Marron is a complete moron, and looks way to much like Bulma.  Spice and the Spice Boys are all pretty much the same.  They're kind of like the Ginyu Force, but with less personality or relevance.

New Voices: Maron's voice is good.  It fits the character well, and isn't too annoying.  Garlic Jr. sounds kind of like the old one, except scratchier and a bit more insane.  It's pretty good, but can get irritating if he starts laughing.  Spice sounds like Jeice with a british accent.  Vinegar is okay, but can sound stupid at times.  Mustard sounds like Vinegar with a sock in his mouth, very annoying.  Salt sounds like Guldo, which is okay.  Oh yeah, in the tapes, there is a preview for the upcoming Trunks Saga, showing various scenes of Trunks.  In the preview we get to hear Trunks' voice, and it sounds good!  I was afraid they were just going to have Christopher Sabat do his voice since he voices Vegeta and about twenty other characters, but thankfully they decided to choose a new voice actor who even sounds kind of like the Japanese Trunks! Awesome!  Oh, I'm rambling, aren't I. Oops.

Overall: I think the saga is purely for entertainment value.  It has some cool fight scenes, but no real story or drama in it.  You know none of the good guys are going to die so it really takes the suspense out of it.
On the plus side, it has some very funny scenes, especially when Marron is hanging out at Korin's tower.  Also, this is the first tim most American fans will see Master Roshi at his true perverted level.  I was amazed at just how much of a dirty old man he was!

Recommendation: Buy the uncuts if you are a collector who wants the whole uncut series (like me) or if you just want to see Master Roshi be himself for once.  Otherwise, just tape the cut episodes when they are shown on Cartoon Network in the spring.
