Birdie's NEWSIES Observations
- Gabe Damon must have absolutly no rhythm at all or something. I mean, the guy never dances, and he only sings, like, one line from the whole movie. I'm a Gabe Damon fan here, but, really, the guy must have no rhythm at all. You don't see him dancing in King of New York, and he rides the carraige out at the end of the movie to avoid the dancing. Come on. The guy just can't dance to save his life. [actually, he does have one dance in King of New York. He stands on a table and flips his hair out of his eyes while he's kind of swinging to the music. No, that's not swining as in the 1940's. His body's just swaying a bit with the music, not necessarily along with the music, however.
- Is it me, or is the Mayor just a major dolt? The man is so aloof. He just can't seem to think for himself. Consider the scene where the mayor, Snyder, and the police cheif are in Pulitzer's office. He can't seem to come up with a reason why they can't arrest Jack Kelly. The mayor turns to the police cheif for help and the police cheif goes something like "Sorry sir, no legal cuase." And the mayor goes "Legal cause!" like that's it! that's why we can't do it, this Jack's neevr done anything wrong, yeah. The guy is such a dolt. Pulitzer must have planted the mayor there so he could control the city.
- Did you ever notice Oscar mocking Blink in the circulation office? The day when Pulitzer jacks up the price, and Blink's got his arms flailing everywhere, complaining. You can see Oscar in the background mimicing Blink's movements. It's very funny.
- Is it me, or is this movie a one-take deal? Do you know how many mess-ups we've all seen? I mean, the part in the Seize the Day Chorale when Blink is late. Don't you think they'd do it over until it was perfect? The bit after King of New York with Race, Blink, and Mush. Don't you think they'd do it over so Blink and Mush didn't have to share a glass and weren't laughing about it in the background? Then there's the part in Seize the Day where Mush is falling from being thrwon up in the air. You think maybe they'd try to cut out his scream by some sort of computer sound thing. I swear, this movie must be a one-take deal. They're are probably more mess-ups, I just haven't found them yet. If you haven't noticed by now, I love watching movies and finding all the faults in them. I kibitz (talk and analyze) a lot during movies and my friends hate it.
- Hey everyone, I found Gabe (a.k.a. Spot Conlon) in the scene after King of New York!!! When Jack's brainstorming about the Rally. The waiter puts a trayful of drinks on the table and they all take one. Gabe's on the far right of the screen and you can see him for a split second when he leans forward to grab his glass. I'm obsessed with him, well somewhat anyway, and I try to find him in every scene.
- Which brings me to something else. Why is Gabe in the scene around Horace Greeley (when the work kids are coming in the end) when he hasn't even walked into the square yet? He's right behind Jack and Sarah, and then a split second later we see him walking into the square leading his newsies and yelling "Brooklyn!" Does Spot have an identical twin we don't know about?
- Q: If Sarah's so modest about her cleavage when she first see's Jack on the fire escape, why does she only slip a skirt on before she meets Jack on the roof? I mean, she doesn't change out of her night gown or anything. She just pulls a skirt on and puff out her night gown and goes up to the roof. Why was she so modest before and not then?
A: She forgot? She secretly wanted Jack to see her cleavage?
- Snyder certainly recovers quickly from getting kicked in the face at the Rally.
- Doesn't David just look demonic with his messed up eyebrows in court and at Denten's apartment.
- When Jack's first a scab, all the guys take turns being mad. Are they in denial or something? Why do they take turns?
- What happened to Les between Denten's apartment and the basement of the World building?
- Is Race chewing gum/tobacco/anything during Once and For All?
- Q: Why does the policeman on the horse go into the circulation office after David comes out- after they've talked with Pulitzer? Is there a reason he should? Why does he do it?
A: Yes, he sure does. He has to move so the newsies can all crowd around Jack and make him claustrophobic. Can't have him in the way of the newsies, never.
- At the end when the newsies all see Teddy Roosevelt, Mush is leaning on Jack's shoulder [he really wants to be in this shot, and he thinks he isn't]. Jack glances at Mush, and he must be thinking "Whatta ya doin' leanin' on me? Git off!" I swear that's what his look says!
- Q: Why does Spot get a ride in the carraige? Why not any of the other guys?
A: (1) Gabe has no rhythm at all (see my first observation) (2) He's the head of the Brooklyn newsies. You need a better reason than that? (3) Gabe has no rhythm.
- Why is Blink's right hand all wrapped up at the end of the movie- during the Carryin' the Banner finale?
- Oh my GOD!!! Out of the many years I've been watching NEWSIES, I always thought Blink's patch was on his right eye. IT'S NOT!!!!!!!!!! it's on his left eye. I realized that on 15 Feb when I was actually paying attention to that detail [I'd read through Newsies Jeopardy earlier]. I can't believe I'd never realized that before. I'm usually so observant. I can't believe that. Am I ever slow!
- For those of you who don't know, Jake's the guy who walks between Jack and Davey at the circulation office, after the two meet and they're making their deal. He's got the red vest.
- "So's yer ol' lady!" is the NEWSIES version of "Yo' momma!" So, next time you feel the urge to scream "Yo' momma!" yell "So's yer ol' lady!" It might just confuse them a little.
- Did anyone else notice that Blink's the only one who actually wears a belt? All the others have suspenders of some fashion. Well, there is that kid with the overalls, but he doesn't count.
- Okay, so we all know the court scene where the guys learn about Jack's real name, right? Well, right after that, it cuts to Tibby's and Denton walking in. Spot walks out right after Denton walks in. You can only see him for a second, but he's there. You know it's him because of the dark blue shirt and, of course, the hat. You might also be able to catch a glimpse of those famous red (though pink in real life) suspenders, but I could be wrong on that. Just be sure to watch for him there. It's very quick. If you blink, you might miss it.
