  • "The Victory Garden." 1943, color, 21:15 mins. USDA. An instructional film produced by the Department of Agriculture. An American family cultivates vegetables according to a government plan.

  • "Hoof in Mouth Disease." 1950s, color, 17:05 mins. USDA. The problems of hoof in mouth disease are solved by the cooking of garbage used for feed. Undertones of Cold War fear of biological warfare.

  • "Lady Marines." 1942, B&W, 20:00 minutes. USMC. A training film designed to ease the nerves of the first lady Marines on the way to Boot Camp. The changing role of women during WWII in society.

  • "When a Fellow Needs a Forester." 1950s, color, 21:00 mins. USDA. Farmers cut down trees to sell to loggers. Trees as a renewable resource.

  • "Ministry of Religion." 1930s, B&W, 12:42 mins. British. Anglican Church helps sailors, children, and old folks. Views of urban London in the 1930s.

  • "What it Means to be an American." 1950s, color, 23:00 mins. Unknown Origin. A civics lesson from the early 50s. Unity is encouraged to fight the threat of foreign enemies.

  • "Feelings of Hostility." 1948, B&W, 30:00 mins. Canadian Film Board. Instructional film showing how repressed hostility can lead to a difficult life.

  • "Food Fair." Date unknown, color, 13:00 mins. USDA. American food and culture is sold abroad at trade fairs.

  • "Combat Report." WWII, B&W, 10 mins. War Dept. This film's intended audience was defense workers in WWII. The process of building an aircraft is portrayed with the human touch of the workers in mind. The assembled plane takes out a U-boat. Good factory scenes and war sequences.

  • "Hookworm." 1940s, color, 10 mins. Animation. US Dept. of Health. The story of Careless Charlie and his family's battle with hookworm. Quality animation with the building of an outhouse in fantasy style.

  • "Metro Survival." 1970s, color, 28 mins. THANCO FILMS San Francisco. Various emergency situations. How to respond to accidents, cuts, etc. The film is highlighted by a self-imposed Heimlich maneuver. Boiled eggs simulate burnt flesh. First aid procedures demonstrated on "modern" sets.

  • "Giant of the North." 1950s, color, 22 mins. Promotional film from a tobacco corporation. The life in Alaska. Eskimos in pursuit of seals, fish, and birds. White invaders from the south arrive and take all the gold and build jet bases. Fighting the Cold War in the frozen north.

  • "Ontario Power." 1940, 32 mins., b&w, Ontario Power Ministry. The story of the struggles of Ontario power. Fighting the snow to put up power lines. Power for mines, homes, hospitals. good use of wind machines and 1940 Canadian life. Nature cannot stop the power company.

  • "Helpful Henry." 1940, 20 mins., b&w, Unkown Origin. All credits missing. A city slicker who looks like Bob Dole goes to a farm to show the farmers how to run their farm. Henry is the city boy getting the farmer's daughter. Henry has a problem, he thinks he has the key to a better life. Good action scenes and well-made script round this short film to something more than just a lesson to Henry. good production values.

  • "South America." 1940, 10 mins., b&w, Instructional Film. How to carve a continent. Old style terms may sound strange in this period piece. All the good stuff goes north as history marches on to the death of the rainforest. People working hard for the Man. Import-export is the word of the day, fruit plantations change the way of life of the fastest growing part of the world.

  • "Orchids." Color, 9 mins., 1940s. The wonderful world of tropical flowers. Models display the flowers in a natural environment. Fun-filled facts are presented in a colorful way. good period color.

  • "The Preamble." b&w, 9 mins., 1935. the preamble of the Constitution is explained in modern terms. Good shots of 30s life, cars. How the Founding Fathers thought of everything.

  • "Couples Recall Process." color, 6 mins., 1970s. Psychobabble 70s style. A married couple work out a few problems for the sake of modern psychotherapy. How memory and relationships work.

  • "Outdoor Fun." b&w, 5 mins., 1936. Enjoyment of the national park system is highlighted. Where to swim, climb, ski. Underwater shots of baby bass and teenage girls.

  • "A Tale of Two Towns." color, 22 mins., 1957. A presentation of the Kellogg Company. The characters are portrayed by real townspeople. How to improve life in small town America. Characters clash, problems are solved.

  • "Map Making." color, 9 mins., 1950s. An instructional film aimed at grade school audience. Young boys with Beaver Cleaver voices listen to an old man who tells them how to make a map of their paper routes.
