Fellow Timmies -

It's been almost 7 years since the first issue of Everyone Needs a Hobby, which to my knowledge was the world's first and is still the only Tim Burton fanzine in existence. At the time, I barely knew any Tim Burton fans. I had a hunch they were out there, but I didn't know if the fanzine was going to take off.

Take off it did. All three issues of this little 'zine sold about 800 copies around the world - Diamond even picked us up as a distributor. It was a labor of love and time and energy. Eric Neumann told me that he was planning to start alt.movies.tim-burton, and the founding of the zine convinced him it was a good idea. I made many incredible friends through the fanzine - including Robin and Tamandra and Virginia and Kelly and Frankenseuss - some of whom I still keep in touch with. To a certain extent, the zine founded a fandom and a subculture, and I'm proud to have been a part of that.

I'd always meant to keep the zine going. I'd hoped, at the very least, I'd be able to turn it into a webzine. I hate starting things and dropping them, so I kept telling myself I'd get just one issue out and pass on the torch. But the truth is, due to personal stress (some of which was tied to the zine), I sort of moved on from the fandom, and it took me years to admit that to myself. The passion that drove me to stay up for several late nights and spend hundreds of dollars out of my own pocket to get the next issue out just isn't there anymore.

Cassandra and Breanne were kind enough to offer to continue the zine. The image to your left was supposed to be the cover of the fourth issue. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened due to my own time constraints - I haven't had the time or even desire to make the time to dig up the old material.

So, I'm sorry - deeply sorry - to those whom I've disappointed because I couldn't keep the zine going. I'm still a Timmy - probably will be 'til the day I die for what it's worth. I have to face the fact that I can't keep up the illusion that I'll ever return to the zine. If you submitted anything to me that never got published, I'm sorry. If you want it back, write me, I'll look for it, though to be honest, it may take a while.

Meanwhile, Cassandra has the copies of issues 1-3. If you want more info about getting those copies please write to her. She's in college now, however, so please be patient.

It is my hope that someone else will use the material to create a website that is much like the zine - not only news and pictures, but a truly collaborative and creative experience. But chances are, it will not be me who creates that website. But if that changes, you'll be the first to know!

I'll still send news updates to the newsgroup. And I'll still beat you senseless if you outbid me at ebay. ;-> And, most importantly, I'll still maintain the links the website. There are so many great websites dedicated to Tim - people who have the time and energy and creative talent to do him justice. This is why I set up this links page, because I want you to support them.

With love,

Emile
