All I Need to Know": Chris Carter of the X-Files is a Closet Duran Duran fan |
40) By now you've probably heard The Bloodhound Gang's song "The Bad Touch," which contains the lyric, "Then we can do it doggie-style so we can both watch X-Files."
Well, Freak No. 2 informs us: Jimmy Pop Ali (singer for the Bloodhound Gang) joined [former Duran bassist] John Taylor on stage at the Roxy, doing a rap of "The Chauffeur" as well as an imitation of Simon Le Bon. Jimmy Pop Ali was also the person who interviewed John for PopSmear magazine. Not only that, but JT was in a Bloodhound Gang video (can't remember the song). As for Duran . . . Jimmy is a fan of the band -- told me so himself when some friends introduced us not long after John's show. In fact, on one of their earlier LPs, one of the members (could be Jimmy, I can't remember) wears a Duran shirt, and on their last album there is a line in one of the songs about listening to "old school Duran Duran." In fact, they also quote the "do do do" from Hungry Like theWolf in this song.
37) This one's from Amy: "I was watching this Intimate and Interactive on Much Music (Canada's version of MTV) and Barenaked Ladies were on. They were asked which groups they listened to when younger. (Their smarty answers were Korn, etc.) Steven (the lead singer) said that he used to always make fun of Duran Duran but recently he found this old videotape at his parents house. He had videotaped all their appearances and videos on this one tape..he concluded that he must have been a Duran Duran Fan.
"And of course Barenaked ladies mentioned CSM in their One Week Song."
36) Another one from Cal: "And snakes in 'Signs and Wonders'? That long overdue tribute to the Wonder that is indeed 'Union of the Snake.' Obsessive, Moi?"
35) In "The Amazing Maleeni," there was a character by the name of Labange. Close enough.
34) There was a St. Clare hospital in "Orison." Yes, it's a reference to my last name as opposed to Duran, but I'm still amused nonetheless. ;->
33) We learned in the "Millennium" episode that Scully agrees with leader singer Simon Le Bon that the millennium doesn't begin until 2001. Thanks to Cal for that tidbit!
32) The pink plastic flamingo Mulder places in the front yard of the house in "Arcadia" is clearly a reference to the pink flamingos which graced Nick Rhodes' wedding reception at London's Savoy Hotel back in the 80's.
31) In the beginning of "The Unnatural," written and directed by David Duchovny, the camera lingers noticeably on one baseball player whose uniform bears the name Durant. I might also point out that Durant is also the cross street of the hotel in wich Duran often stay in Los Angeles - but I don't need to tell you that, right, CC?
My theory is that CC cajoled Duchovny into including this painfully obvious reference in the episode... there again my theory is that the only reason DD was cast as Mulder is the similarity in initials to CC's favorite band, so you might want to take what I have to say with a grain of salt. ;->
30) Submitted by Dave Lintgen: "Ok, so I was watching VH1's 'Behind the Music' last night about Duran Duran.... and, I can't believe that this came into my mind, I must have been corrupted by your Duran page, but I thought to my self the ep 'The Beginning,' much of that episode centers around a nuclear power plant.... and what is a nuclear power plant? It is a POWER STATION....which is of course the name of the 80s group featuring a couple of Taylors that I'm sure you are familiar with. (OK so that's a complete stretch, but it came to into my mind and I thought you might appreciate it)."
29) In Season 6's "Milagro" (an ep penned by CC himself), a character named Ken Nascimento makes an appearance - an obvious nod to Duran's collaboration with Milton Nascimento for the song "Breath After Breath." Alright, clearly Ten Thirteen is just funning with me now.
28) The April 4, 1999 X-Files episode was a repeat so it wouldn't conflict with the world premiere of VH-1's "Behind the Music: Duran Duran." Guess we know what CC was watching at 9pm that night, eh?
27) Before you accuse me of stretching it, know that I didn't come up with this. In fact, it's from a fellow Durannie who didn't even know about my mission to reveal CC's Dark Secret to the world:
"Last Friday (March 12), I was actually home long enough to see 'Millennium,' the other Chris Carter show. At the very beginning of the show, the music was distinctly electronic, with filtered vocals, which at one point, distinctly said, 'Hallucinate...' If I were to say that the accent on the voice was definitely British, I'd be lying. I'll just say that it was possibly British. The questions are: could this have been a taste of "Hallucinating Elvis" [the name of Duran's upcoming album]? And if so, because of the lack of record contract, would it not be listed in the credits (or was I too busy applying very matte lipstick {Body Shop 'Licorice Stick,' loove it!} to notice)? It's a stretch, but isn't that what Duran Duran is all about?" My, gawd, Mr. Carter, the Duran influence is seeping into your other shows! ;->
26) Another gem spotted by Cal of The Daily Scandal: "I can't believe I came across this. It happened entirely by accident and it provides clear proof (if even more proof) that Chris Carter is One Of Us! I saw 'Ordinary World' on a music programme yesterday, and I nearly fell off the chair when I noticed that the name on Nick's synth was Kurtzweil [the name of Martin Landau's character in 'Fight the Future']! I'm not making this up! I couldn't make this up!"
25) The dance of the "Rain King" could only have come from careful repeated viewings of Simon Le Bon in the midst of one of his seizures... er... performances. 24) One of the episodes in Season 6 was "Arcadia." Seeing as how Arcadia is also the name of one of Duran's splinter groups, I'm thinking this man couldn't be more obvious in his fandom. He might as well start wearing jazz shoes and fedoras to work, 'cause I'm already a believer. ;-> 23) An actor named John R. Taylor played the husband in "Genderbender" (refer to reason No. 10). John Taylor is the former bassist of Duran Duran. 22) From a fellow X-Phile: " I'm sure paranormal forces were involved in getting [Duran's] hair to look like that. Not to mention in accounting for their wild success." 21) CC works with an actor who once allowed himself to be seen in public like this -----------------------------------> 20) Chris Carter works with actors like Nicholas Lea (yes, the other Nick in my life) who fronted a band for five years named Beau Monde which he admits was heavily influenced by 80's bands Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and the like (Source: Cult TV, June 1998). You know what this means, don't you? If I meet Nick Lea, we'll actually have something to talk about. Not necessarily anything he wants to own up to anymore, but something. [That one was written way before I met Nick and he shot the Duran theory to hell.] |

19) CC's feathered haircut foreshadowing that of any Durannie seen in Duran's 1984 tour documentary "Sing Blue Silver." Nice deer.
18) Claire Stansfield, a former girlfriend of Duran's lead singer Simon Le Bon appeared as "The Jersey Devil."
17) Submitted by the Daily Scandal's Cal ("Come out CC! Come out and declare it to the world!"): Chris has obviously seen Duran Duran's epic film "Arena." In it, Durannies-in-distress and mutants are submerged in a greenish liquid goo - much like the X-Files movie.
16) Also from Cal: That creature that attacked Simon Le Bon in the "Wild Boys" video? Flukeworm.
15) The poem recited in the episode "Fearful Symmetry" is "The Tyger" by William Blake. "Tiger Tiger" is the name of an instrumental by Duran, based on the poem of the same name.
X-Phile Jeni later added: " I think it should be noted that the original name of "Fearful Symmetry" was'Tyger, Tyger.' Of course, CC probably decided that was too obvious and changed it."
14) In "Die Hand Die Verlezt," one of the characters was Dave Duran.
13) Duran recorded a cover of "Crystal Ship." Three years later, The Creator emulates his idols by including the song on the soundtrack for the X-Files movie.
12) "Fallen Angel," an X-Files episode, is also the name of a Duran Duran song. 11) "2 Shy," another episode, is also the name of the Kajagoogoo song produced by Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes. 10) "Genderbender," the title of an X-File episode, was a phrase often bestowed on androgynous 80's rock groups like Duran. 9) Amanda Pays, who played Phoebe Green in "Fire," was thanked on John Taylor's solo album. 8) Duran's videos for "The Union of the Snake" and "Wild Boys" are in fact 2-part mytharcs much like an X-Files episode where no one knows what the hell is going on. 7) Much like John Taylor in "Wild Boys" was strapped to a car and forced to watch his fantasies on a screen ala "The Clockwork Orange," Mulder was strapped to a virtual reality contraption in "Kill Switch." 6) The X-Files movie opened in the U.S. on June 19, right in the midst of the High Holy Days of Duran Duranism. June 8 and June 20 are the respecitve birthdays of Duran's founding members Nick Rhodes and John Taylor. The period in between are the High Holy Days, to be observed with reverence and ceremony. The fact that Chris Carter chose to have his first X-Files movie released at the tail end of this celebration is the highest compliment a Durannie can bestow. |

4) Michael Des Barres of Duran splinter group's Power Station guest-starred on "21 Jump Street." Steven Williams ("Mr. X") starred in "21 Jump Street."
3) Admittedly, this is stretching it, but Dana Scully has the same birthday (Feb. 23) as David Sylvian, a Nick Rhodes clone and huge influence on Duran's music.
2) The Lone Gunmen are actually metaphors for Durannies, who see everything as a conspiracy against the continuing success of their favorite band. Also, Durannies meet at conventions, just like the Lone Gunmen did.
1) The sheriff's name in "Home" is Andy Taylor. Andy Taylor was the original guitarist for Duran Duran (okay, so it was also the name of the sherriff in "Andy Griffith," but the Duran reference is much more important).

1) I Believe, All I Need to Know 2) Is There Anyone Out There 3) So Misled (Think E.B.E.) 4) Is There Something I Should Know 5) Proposition 6) Lonely in Your Nightmare 7) Do You Believe in Shame? (Think Duane Barry) 8) American Science (Think Scully!) 9) Notorious (Note: Duran's album artwork consisted of a huge fingerprint) 10) Stop Dead 11) Can You Deal with It? 12) My Antarctica (Think movie!) 13) Burning the Ground (Think Ice) 14) Out of My Mind 15) Buried in the Sand (Think Anasazi) |
John Taylor solo: 22) Feelings are Good and Other Lies 23) Always Wrong Andy Taylor solo: 24) I Might Lie And, finally, what we believe to be the anthem for Mulder and Scully's relationship - from John Taylor's solo album: 25) Everyone is Getting it But Me |
