Patient X

"Gillian was able to portray the puzzlement over what was happening to abducties and her feelings about extraterrestrials very believably, and it greatly benefitted the show."

-Christina O.-

On Sunday, March 1, 1998 the episode, "Patient X", aired. This episode is the 13th episode of the fifth season.

"Patient X" is part one of a two part arc ending with "The Red and the Black." In my opinion, the first portion of the episode is extremely borring. One of the reasons is that I am a Scully-ist.

The second half of the episode, like virtually every other one, shows the amazing, breath-taking talent of one Gillian Anderson. A fantasic scene by her was when she was talking with Cassandra Spender. Another memorible scene was when Scully told Mulder that he "shouldn't be so quick to rule out what Cassandra Spender has to say." Maybe it's just me, but the way in which she spoke, especially when she said the word 'rule', showed how frightened she was. Frightened of what might happen to her and frightened to tell her partner about her true feelings. That moment is unforgettable. If I were Scully, I would have slapped Mulder at least once (when they were on Skyland Mt.). He was being such a selfish jerk to his partner. He knew that what was going on was effecting her emotionally, yet he was too caught up in his own arrogance. For five years, Scully has put up with Mulder's far-fetched, crazy, lunatic theories and ideas. However, once Scully has her own theory, which even has sense to it, Mulder totally dismisses it, citing that she's just wrong. I better shift topics. After watching the episode, I was left with an intriging question: If those bad guys and the Russian boy, Dmitri, had their eyes, nose, and mouth sewed shut...how do they breathe?? Also, did anyone else notice that Chris Owens, the man who played Cassandra Spender's son, Jeffrey, in this episode played the young Cigarette smoking Man in "Demons" and "Musings of a Cigarette-Smoking Man"??

Below, are a few quotes from the episode and the ratings submitted by XFEOS members. They are followed with the comments and opinions on "Patient X".

Marita Covarrubias: "These are UN peacekeepers. This is a mission of mercy."
Alex Krycek: "This is a mission of fear. Yours and the men you work for. You go go back and thell them what you've seen, what you've found." ... "Now you go back and you tell them..."
Covarrubias: "Tell them what? What happened here?"
Krycek: "Tell them it's all going to hell...You tell them to kiss my American ass." He spits at her feet

Mulder: "I think that if you prepare people well enough to believe a lie, they will believe it as if it were true. And if you tell them a really big lie, like there are aliens from outer space, much more than a small one, they will believe it. And if you suggest to them that these aliens are doing bad things to them, the power of the suggestion will be to make people believe that certain psychopathologies and neuroses they've suffering from can now be attributed to that."

Mulder: "What I've seen, I've seen because I wanted to believe. If you look too hard you can go mad, but if you continue to look, you become liberated. You come awake, as if from a dream, realizing that the lies are there simply to protect what they're advertising...a government which knows that it's greatest strength is not in defense, but in attack...It is strongly hold by believers of UFO phenomenia that there is military complicity or involvement in abductions, but what if there is no complicity? What if it is simply just the military seeking to develop an arsenal of weapons against which there is no defense: biological warfare. Which justifies, in their eyes, making an ass out of a nation with stories of little green men. A conspiracy wrapped in a plot inside a government agenda."

Mulder: "I'm questioning myself and how I was tricked. How I was led to believe through an elaborate staging of events that my sister had been abducted."
Dr. Werber: "A man with faith can indulge in the luxury of skepticism."
Mulder: "I don't think you understand. There's just too much evidence that it's all been a lie. The conspiracy is not to hide the existence of extraterrestrials. It's to make people believe in it so completely that they question nothing."

Cassandra Spender: "Now is a time of war and stress among the alien nations. The different races, they're in upheavel..They are here to deliver a message. Except, something has gone wrong. There are other forces at work."

Well-Manicured Man: "That what was taking place was a staging for group abductions. In the final staged before it begins, there will most likely be assemblies."
Elder: "We're years away from that."
2nd Elder: "If we're to believe their timetable."
Well-Manicured Man: "Unless it's already begun."
Elder: "We're 15 years away."
Covarrubias: "I don't think this was planned. I think something or someone set this in motion. An act of war, against us and our plans."

Well-Manicured Man: Answering phone "Yes?"
Krycek: "Well, look who's answering the batphone."

Scully: "Shouldn't that be my picture mext to that headline? Or is that just you having a little fun?"
Mulder: "Does it look like I'm having fun, Scully?"
Scully: "You look constipated, actually."
Mulder: "That makes sense. I've had my head up my rear end for the last 5 years."
Scully: "This doesn't have anything to do with Cassandra Spender?"
Mulder: "Cassandra Spender is living proof that the truth I've been so boldly seeking for the last 5 years is the truth of a madman."
Scully: "How's that?"
Mulder: "One more anal-probing, gyro-pyro, levitating eco-plasm alien antimatter story, and I'm going to take out my gun and shoot somebody."
Scully: "Well...I guess I'm done here. You seem to have invalidated your own work. Have a nice life."

Scully: "You've come a long way, Mulder."
Mulder: "Yeah, and still nobody believes me."

Scully: "Cassandra Spender was abducted at Skyland Mountain. That's where I was taken, where Duane Barry took me."
Mulder: "The woman is a nut, Scully."
Scully: "It says here that she has an implant in the base of her neck."
Mulder: "Where the government no doubt removed her brain."

Scully: "I think you should know that I learned about you from your son."
Cassandra Spender: "Jeffrey."
Scully: "Yes. I'm an FBI agent, and he asked that I protect against your story getting out. I guess I'm betraying that by coming here. But, um... But I don't... I'm here for more personal reasons, actually. I took the liberty of reading your medical file."
Cassandra: "You're felling it too, aren't you. Here." She places her hand on the back of Scully's neck. "You wake up at night knowing you have to be somewhere, but you don't know where it is. Like you forgot an appointment you didn't know you had.
Scully: "That's not why I'm here. I'm here because I, uh... Because... I wanted to tell you that you should... That you should not remove the thing that you have in your neck. Not without possible consequences. Um... I became very ill."
Cassandra: "I'd never dreamed of removing it. I want to go...wherever it is. Oh, they have so much to teach us. You being a doctor would want to know, they're great healers. Maybe that's why you were chosen."

Scully: "Mulder, why are you tiptoeing around the obvious fact here? I mean, this is Skyland Mountain. We're right back here on Skyland Mountain."
Mulder: "And you think it's related to your abduction from the same place?"
Scully: "Well, you can't deny the connection."
Mulder: "You think this is some kind of abduction senerio?"
Scully: "No...I'm not saying that."
Mulder: "Do you have any evidence of that?"
Scully: "What do you mean by evidence?"
Mulder: "Well, that's what I'm asking you ."
Scully: "Well, are you going to give me your theory then?"
Mulder: "No. I'm going to give you an explaination."

Scully: Reading medical file "'The patient believes that he will be contacted or called to an undisclosed place where he will be abducted by aliens.'"
Mulder: "The implants trigger those responses. These people were led to Skyland Mountain."
Scully: "By whom?"
Mulder: "By the same government that put the implant in you, to fuction as a homing mechanism."
Scully: "Mulder, that doesn't make sense."
Mulder: "Why not? A tracking system using military app satellite technology to monitor test subjects or to stage what people may otherwise believe as alien abductions."
Scully: "But they weren't abducted. They were led to their deaths. And for what purpose?"
Mulder: "I don't know yet."
Scully: "You know, Mulder..." Phone rings "maybe you shouldn't be so quick..." Phone rings "to r-rule out what Cassandra Spender has to say."
