The End

"It's hard to believe what just happened! It really gets you in the mood for the movie."

-Eric R.-

On Sunday, May 17, 1998 the episode, "The End", aired. This episode is the 20th and final episode of the fifth season.

"The End" followed the footsteps of "Anasazi," "Talitha Cumi," and "Gethsemane" in becoming a classic season finale. This episode has everything a television show dreams of: fantastic and moving acting by the entire cast, intriguing storyline and characters, truly memorable scenes due to the usual camera angles by the director of photography, and, the one aspect which ties the show together...the phenomenal music by Mark Snow.
Scully
Gillian Anderson gave a memorable performance as a jealous Agent Scully. It was obvious that Scully new that there was something that wnet on between her beloved partner and this woman from the conversation in the car. A woman can sense those things. I am pressed to believe that Mimi Rogers' character, Agent Diana Fowley, was actually married to Agent Mulder. We found out in this episode that they were romantically involved during Mulder's early days in the F.B.I., which was around 1991. In "Unusual Suspects" and "Travelers" which take place during that time period, a young Agent Mulder is scene wearing a wedding ring. So, does that mean that Agent Diana Fowley was once Diana Mulder? I've heard a lot of fans complaining about "The End" in that there was no cliffhanger into the movie. I thought that the ending was great and that it was as much as a cliffhanger that any television show can have to lead into a feature film. "The X-Files" could not have a finale like the ones in "Anasazi," "Talitha Cumi," and "Gethsemane" because people who did not see "The End" would then be completely lost in the movie. Non X-Philes would have no clue as to what would be going on in "Fight the Future." I feel that Chris Carter did an amazing job at making the fifth season finale one that greatly leads into the movie, but not so much that people who do not watch the television show will be able to understand the feature film. The last scene of Scully and Mulder standing in their burnt down office was tremendously moving. You can literally see the pain in their faces from having the past five years of their life be stolen away in a single moment. It was actully painful for me to see their office like that. I still cannot believe it. It has been a part of all X-Philes' lives for five years. We all mistakenly thought that it would always be there. The scene would have been even more shocking had Gillian not accidently slipped and told everyone at the X-Files Expo in New York City on May 9 that their office was burnt down. Even though I prepared for seeing their sacred office destroyed, I was still shocked by the actual sight of it.
