Dr. Matthew Harmon of Port Charles

Synopsis
April 1998

Matt & Grace

During the month of April, Matt draws closer to Grace. He likes Grace as a friend, but he feels an enormous sense of guilt over Grace's having gotten shot by Bobby. Grace has genuine feelings for Matt, and she relishes his attention, even though she knows deep down that Matt loves Ellen. Matt has tried to make Ellen realize how much he loves her, but she keeps resisting him. She is still afraid to open herself to love.

In the meantime, Ellen receives a phone call from a hospital in San Diego. They are interested in interviewing her for a position there. Ellen talks it over with Matt. Matt, reluctant to say anything to Ellen that would jeopardize her chances for advancement, encourages her to go. Ellen tells Matt that it is evident that he and Grace have something going. Matt tells Ellen that he has tried in every way to let Ellen know that he loves her, and that he is tired of being turned down. He tells her that he wants to get on with his life. After Matt leaves, Ellen calls the people in San Diego and tells them that she will go for the interview.

As Matt slowly gets his life back together, events leading to murder begin to unfold in Port Charles. Kevin Collins, a psychiatrist in Port Charles, wrote a book which he titled "General Homicide." The characters in the book were all based on the inhabitants of Port Charles, particularly the doctors and nurses at General Hospital. In the book, a serial killer stalked the environs of the hospital, methodically killing people by bizarre methods. The first to be murdered was the surgeon, Bennett Devlin, father of Matt's fellow intern, Julie. He was stabbed to death with a fountain pen through his heart.

One by one, the interns of General Hospital are drawn into the murder plot. Some of them have genuine motives for killing Devlin. Because of Matt's past experiences with him, Matt immediately suspects that Chris Ramsey is involved in some way.

Matt had confronted Chris after his father told him about Chris sending him the picture of Matt. After Chris denies everything, Matt decides to have a private investigator investigate Chris' past, and he learns that Chris had forged checks and was involved in an insurance scam. He also learns that Chris had made a deal with Bennett Devlin for $20,000, which Devlin had transferred to Chris' account the day he died. Matt suspects that the deal involved proceeds from the sale of a formula for a nerve regenerating drug that Devlin had acquired by stealing it from three of the interns who had developed it, Jake, Karen, and Joe.

Out of gratitude for what she had been through for him, Matt gives Grace a surprise birthday party. It is the eve of Ellen's departure for San Diego. When Ellen gets to the party, she finds Grace and Matt kissing. She becomes angry and hurt, and later a conversation with Matt concerning her impending move to San Diego, she leaves the party abruptly. In the morning she flies to San Diego without telling Matt goodbye. Matt is hurt over Ellen's actions.

When she returns a week later, she tell Matt that she has been offered the job, and that she is seriously considering taking it. Feeling that he has done everything in his power to convince Ellen of their love for one another, to no avail, Matt, obviously very troubled, wishes her the best.

As the month of May ends, the race for the Quartermaine Residency heats up. The top contenders are Matt, Chris and Eve. Eve is resigned to the fact that the prize will go to either Chris or Matt. Chris becomes even more determined to do everything in his power to see that he beats Matt out of the Quartermaine.

The poem at the top by Natalie Moscovich was found on the Internet.
We added the title, since it seemed so appropriate for Ellen.
