Two hours. To make a decision that could potentially affect the entire rest of his life.
Yeah. No pressure.
Wormholes. Okay, he could grasp that.
Aliens. A little harder, but sure. Why not? He can deal with that, too.
Mutant genes. Biology’s never been his strong suit... but that glowing blue chair and light show? Pretty convincing evidence. So he supposes he’ll buy that one.
One-way trip. No more live college ball ever. Big minus. Taking the game to a whole new galaxy. Kind of cool.
A whole new galaxy.
That sinks in.
He’d be an idiot not to go.

He'd seen the nod.
That slight incline of the head giving him permission to do what they both knew had to be done. And it had to be done. No way around it. Maybe if he'd been a little faster –maybe a lot faster- it wouldn't have been necessary. But he wasn't in the habit of second-guessing himself or brooding over things he couldn't change.
So why did he keep waking up at two in the morning with the memory of watery, sunken eyes staring at him?
He'd seen the nod. Sumner had accepted his fate.
So why couldn't he?

He surveyed his team with satisfaction, certain they would live up to the confidence placed in them. They'd been handpicked from both the Earthlings and Athosians – although there wasn't much distinction anymore. He turned back to give the command staff a familiar grin and wave before stepping through the rippling disc.
Elizabeth Weir stood at the edge of the observation balcony, frowning faintly only after he vanished.
"Relax," Sheppard said, bumping her shoulder with his own as he leaned on the railing beside her. "They'll be fine. I've taught Jinto everything I know."
"You know... that's precisely what worries me."

Five years in the Pegasus galaxy, he thought.
They’d been offered Hazardous Duty incentive pay to sign on. Sheppard had wrangled it up to Imminent Danger the first time they had reestablished contact with Earth. God bless the major –a colonel himself now- for insisting on regular promotions as well. His own advancement from first lieutenant to captain had come right on schedule during their second year in Atlantis. Sheppard had kept surprisingly meticulous track of it all.
One year as an 0-2, four as an 0-3. Plus incentives. Aiden Ford grinned at his check for five years of back-pay.

Days here are longer than on Earth. Not much, but enough to screw up his wristwatch. The discrepancies have accumulated gradually and it now says it’s three am despite the blazing sun overhead. Basically, it’s as useless as the lieutenant’s compass, but he’d feel naked without it.
His internal clock is even more scrambled. The last time he went through the Gate, it was afternoon on one side, morning on the other, and the middle of the night when he’d returned. He suspects he’s missing an hour or two somewhere. Now he’s hungry and doesn’t know what meal he wants.
