THE NINTH GATE

More of a dark adventure than a horror film, Roman Polanski's "The Ninth Gate" involves a rather unscrupluous book dealer (played effectively by Johnny Depp) hired to find two rare Satanic books in Europe. Of course, the quest turns out to be dangerous, and Depp is dodging collapsing scaffolds and getting into car chases. He finds a few bodies too, but the movie is not very gory. There is some nudity, but overall, the film is very subtle and tame by today's standards. Most of the horror is due to the old "Devil walks among us" phenomenon. Unfortunately, you get plenty of hints over who the Devil is in this picture, and this spoils the surprise at the end. On the plus side, "The Ninth Gate" has a fine cast and director, as well as some nice European scenery. It's too bad that the story falls apart after the first half with over-the-top Satanic rituals (such as Frank Langella's character setting himself on fire) and a rather weak finale.

The bottom line: "The Ninth Gate" is fairly good but not recommended for every horror fan. Some will find it too tame and slow to be rewarding.

QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS OF MOVIE

OVERALL RATING

7 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 9-12 dots is the equivalent of two thumbs up while 3 dots or less means two thumbs up the ass. **
