ASYLUM OF SATAN

Most--if not all--horror movies which have the word "asylum" or "Satan" in their titles are from a schlocky realm, and that goes double for "Asylum of Satan". This movie has it all: a distinctly 70's soundtrack, an unbelievably naive singer, her heavily mustachioed boyfriend clad in harlequin bellbottoms, an easily goaded detective, devil worshippers dressed up like Klansmen, a cross-dressing satanic priest, and a nearly motionless, cross-eyed devil in the "grand" finale where the problems basically go away on their own. This devil has to be the most laughable satanic creature ever filmed; it's ten times more laughable than the demonic Mr. Pitch from the Mexican Christmas movie "Santa Claus". On the plus side, there are some occasional atmospheric moments like the satanic priest playing a wicked toccata on a pipe organ, but overall, this movie is a veritable benchmark of cheeziness.

The bottom line: The "Asylum of Schlock" is a more appropriate title. Watch only if you are in the mood for a B-movie and some nostaglia from the 70's.
