"Alien3" is one of those movies where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. In other words, despite the good acting, the impressive but powerfully gloomy atmosphere, and a reasonably well-crafted story, this movie is only average overall. How can this be? Part of the problem lies in the characters. It's difficult to relate to a bunch of violent prisoners, and thus it means little when the alien kills them. At least with the first two movies of the Alien series, the characters are likable enough that you really want them to get away from the aliens. Also, many of the death scenes in "Alien3" are hurried to the point that you don't get a good look of the characters dying, and this trivializes their deaths! Perhaps the biggest problem is that it has to live up to the first two movies in the series. Unfortunately, it fails, and "Alien3" is just an epigone, merely an undistinguished imitator of its excellent predecessors. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots, the better the movie. A dozen dots is as good as they get, while one or no dots accounts for what can euphemistically be labeled "bottom-of-the-barrel entertainment." ** |
