While the more graphic scenes from the novel are omitted in the screenplay (such as a starving rat being coaxed inside a victim's vagina), "American Psycho" still qualifies as a horror movie. Although not especially gory, there is an abundance of blood and some severed heads, and to satisfy those who expect to see naked girls in their movies, there is plenty of nudity and kinky sex. However, the horror scenes are sporadic, and the emphasis of this film is actually satirizing WASPy white-collar workers and the materialism prevailing during the 80's. There is no plot per se, just the day-to-day exploits of Patrick Bateman, an amoral yuppie who just inexplicably grows more psychotic all the time. Eventually, his sense of reality is lost, and the movie reflects this with some over-the-top scenes toward the end (such as the automated teller machine demanding to eat a kitten and an unbelievable, Desperado-like shoot-out scene). Christian Bale performs well enough as the killer yuppie; although he seems more cheerful than what I've pictured the character to be (Bateman has a lot of angry thoughts in the book), that baleful glee suits a satirical slasher very well. It's difficult to pin down the exact type of horror fans who will enjoy this film, but "American Psycho" would probably fare best with those who can tolerate a chaotic storyline and are in the mood for something satirical. The bottom line: "American Psycho" is fairly good but definitely not for everybody. |
