BLAIR WITCH PROJECT

"Blair Witch Project" is far from the average horror film, and because it has made tremendous net profits, there will probably be imitators. Remember the low-budget hit "Halloween" creating a slasher flick craze throughout the 80's? Remember "Scream" inspiring a whole slew of hip horror movies starring popular TV stars for much of the '90's? Well, this highly successful movie might start a new direction for the horror genre shortly after Y2K. It is shot in a distinctive documentary style, which adds a strong sense of realism. Unfortunately, the herky-jerky, amateur camera work sometimes makes it hard to see things and is likely to cause motion sickness in suspectible individuals. The emotional moments vastly outnumber the scary ones since the three main characters are almost constantly bickering with each other. Nevertheless, the movie gets very creepy once one of the characters disappears, and the last few minutes are the scariest of all. It's a shame that it ends so abruptly, and if you don't pay attention to all of the local lore from the beginning, then you are bound to be disappointed by the ending. At best, the ending makes you think about the movie: Is there a witch in the woods? Or is it a serial killer using the legends as part of a modus operandi? Overall, "Blair Witch Project" is a good--and very different--horror movie and may prove to be quite influential in the future.
