With a title like "The Boogens", you might think it's about little, mean-spirited critters wreaking havoc or possibly it's some kind of cheezy ghost movie, but actually neither description is accurate. The creatures are nothing like Gremlins or ghosts. Until the near end, the movie wisely keeps the monsters obscured, but you might laugh when they're finally shown. I won't spoil the surprise, but it is safe to say that these monsters are made on a low budget. Aside from that minor carp and a comparatively sluggish middle, this is a delightful horror film with likable characters and a relatively intelligent script (as far as horror movies go). Despite having a lot of familiar plot elements, such as the misunderstood old man and the scary basement, "Boogens" manages to be distinctive. It's a little bit like any other horror movie, but you would be hard-pressed to find anything really close to it. "Aberration" is probably the most similar movie to "Boogens", but these two are still pretty different from each other. The bottom line: Check "Boogens" out, especially if you like horror films from the early 80's. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 12 dots on the domino is the best rating while no dots means it would only take up valuable space in the dumpster. ** |
