Like "Creepshow" and "Nightmares", "Campfire Tales" is an anthology of short horror stories. There are four stories here. Three of them are told by some adolescents around a campfire while the fourth story deals with the rather surprising fate of the adolescents themselves. The first story being told has a couple going out into the woods where a horrible beast resides. It's not bad, but it could have been scarier. For one thing, the woods should not have been so well lit at night time. The visibility is good enough that you could probably see the beast coming over a hundred yards away. If it was so dark that people can hardly see where they're going, then it would add a nice touch of fear to the picture. To the story's credit though, the beast is pretty scary and leaves a gruesome calling card. Following the woods story is one about a pedophile stalking a little girl, both on the internet and in her home. This story actually manages to be quite disturbing, particularly when the pedophile creeps under the girl's bed! One of the most memorable scenes of the entire movie is what he does to the girl's arm while it's dangling over the side of the bed! Too bad the third story with the biker and the ghosts breaks the momentum. Although it is strange enough to be intriguing and contains a considerable amount of gore, it disappoints because it fails to top the creepiness from the pedophile story. To keep the momentum building, it would be best if the movie shows the ghost story before the pedophile one. However, the ghost story foreshadows the one dealing with the storytellers themselves, and the movie would have to give up a relatively smooth transition from the third story to the last. The last story shows what really happened to the people around the campfire, but it's more of a surprise than a scare, unfortunately. Overall, "Campfire Tales" is a fairly decent collection of stories. It's nothing outstanding, but it's still worth watching late at night. |
