"Castle Freak" has most of the vital ingredients to make a masterpiece. It has some great visuals (particularly the old Italian castle and the make-up on the freak), an above-average cast (you can't go wrong with Jeffrey Combs), and a competent director. However, it is missing one thing: a strong story. It takes a while before the castle freak breaks loose and starts killing people, and he only gets to murder a few minor characters (and one cat). Fortunately, the killings themselves are quite graphic, and the scene where the freak chomps on a prostitute's breasts is particularly gruesome. Even so, the movie is a bit slow, and aside from the few deaths, it ultimately doesn't reward you with very much. The bottom line: "Castle Freak" is average overall, but it's a big underacheivement considering all of the talent involved. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 11 or 12 dots is top-notch entertainment while one or no dots signifies the bottom-notch variety that may be slightly more amusing than watching the needles move on the gas meter. ** |
