One of the most original vampire movies around, "Cronos" has a distinct Mexican flavor and a very different kind of horror movie hero: a kindly grandfather who gradually becomes a vampire after handling a neat-looking relic called the Cronos device. Some stylish directing from Guillermo Del Toro even reveals the cool-looking clockwork inside the device. Since the relic makes immortality possible, the few who know about it are willing to do anything to get it. One such person hires a goon (Ron Perlman) to steal it, and when it comes to playing a beastly henchman, Perlman is a natural! However, in spite of its originality and style, this movie is not for everyone. It may be too mild for some horror fans, and gore-hounds will only get to savor a few ounces of blood and one gruesome scene where thick layers of skin are peeled away. Even so, "Cronos" is highly recommended if you want to see something refreshingly different within the horror genre. Just a note on the side: The movie comes in two versions. One is spoken in Spanish and translated with English subtitles. The other is dubbed over in English. I have only seen the dubbed version, and the dubbing isn't as bad as I thought it would be. You can tell the dubbing is somewhat out-of-sync with some of the Mexican cast, but it isn't particularly distracting. Ron Perlman does not get dubbed over, by the way. |

** NOTE: The more dots, the better it is. 12 dots indicates a masterpiece while no dots means it's a "disasterpiece." ** |
