"Cube" makes a strong case that you don't need a big budget to make an excellent horror movie. Although it has been filmed on a meager budget of less than $400,000 (the approximate budget for the super-cheesy direct-to-video, "The Killer Eye"), the visuals are still impressive, and the acting is pretty good for the money. What helps the most is the suspenseful story. This is a movie that terrorizes its audience with uncertainty. In a labyrinth called the Cube, some of the rooms are boobytrapped, and if anyone ventures into one, the results are graphic. Every time someone enters a new room, you can only arm yourself for the worst to happen. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. Even when the characters think they've figured out where the traps are set, they're still not 100% sure. Also, some of the characters are unpredictable enough to leave you wondering if they end up causing a death or two themselves. If that isn't enough, there is no food or water, which means they have to get out of the Cube soon or else they'll either dehydrate/starve to death or possibly resort to cannibalism for survival. The bottom line: "Cube" is a must-see, especially for sci-fi/horror fans. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. 12 is a masterpiece. One or no dots is also a masterpiece, if you consider poop to be a gourmet ingredient. ** |
