Like "Return to Horror High", "Cutting Class" involves a multiple murderer running loose in a high school, and there are a ton of red herrings to keep you guessing who the killer might be. Most of the murders have been done before in earlier horror movies, though the trampoline impalement is pretty unique. Also, this is probably the first movie that toys with the notion of throwing sodium metal in water to burn an unsuspecting villain. The crazy janitor is amusing, and he delivers the best line of the entire film: "I am the custodian of your f***ing destiny!" Brad Pitt debuts in this movie as the school's bad boy, and his acting is only okay here. His acting talent becomes much more evident in the mid-1990's. Jill Schoelen is very pretty, if a bit underreactive. Her character does not seem too bothered by the fact that one of her admirers is a violent schizophrenic, and she seems strangely calm even when she is caught in the middle of an intense showdown, which only ends because the villain does something really moronic: he actually closes his eyes long enough for his would-be victim to pick up a hammer and bonk him on the head! The killer is pretty sloppy in the beginning too. Although he shoots Martin Moll with an arrow, he does not follow up on it and only leaves poor Martin to lie helpless in the woods for days. Granted, it is a little funny how Martin Moll gets stepped on without being noticed, and no matter how much he cries for help, it only goes mistaken as the mating calls of a bullfrog. However, it doesn't make the killer seem particularly scary or smart when he lets his first victim live, especially when the victim has heard the killer's voice! Overall, "Cutting Class" doesn't quite cut it and ranks about average, despite having a good number of plot twists and some underused ideas. |
