"Dawn of the Dead" is a thoroughly entertaining sequel to the legendary zombie movie, "Night of the Living Dead." It's over 120 minutes long, but every minute is captivating. The film benefits from an interesting cast, a thoughtfully-written script loaded with dark humor, plenty of action, and, not to mention, a good amount of gore (both from zombies and their victims). The premise of the movie is great with four people making a home out of an indoor mall while dealing with hundreds of mannequin-like zombies and then a heavily-armed biker gang who want to loot the place. A lot of the dark humor derives from how the living characters fight the undead, especially when the bikers have to contend with the zombies. Some particularly memorable moments include a zombie being thrown over the second-floor railing and some unruly bikers stealing jewelry off an unlucky--and undead--woman. While progressing through with the plot, "Dawn of the Dead" also makes a rather blunt statement about consumerism and its seemingly hyponotic effects on the masses. The zombies somehow remember the mall being an integral part of their lives and so they are drawn there. However, the living characters also succumb to the lure of the mall and become reluctant to leave. There are just too many wonderful things to pass up in there--just as there are too many wonderful things in this movie to pass up! Just a little comment on the side: I acknowledge the fact that the film took place in the '70's, but since when did the MuzakTM played in malls (and elevators) ever include slide whistles? :-) |

OVERALL RATING
** The more dots on the domino, the better the rating. After reading that block of text above, you'd figure 12 dots is pretty damn good. Actually, that's the most I can give a movie. Honestly, who ever heard of a domino with 13 dots? ** |
