"Deadly Blessing" is a supernatural thiller where a pretty farmer is being harassed by her ultra-pious relatives who call themselves Hittites! Although they are backward folk, they certainly don't look like anything out of the Bronze Age but instead appear remarkably Amish. It could have been worse. The heroine might have ended up living next door to Assyrians dressed up as Hasidic Jews. Leading these Hittites is Ernest Borgnine, and he is quite effective as a spiritual bully. There are also a couple scary scenes, one involving a young Sharon Stone trapped inside a darkened barn and another involving a snake slithering inside a bathtub. For the most part, the movie is fairly interesting, but things fall apart in the last quarter when there is a rapid succession of plot twists, one of which turns a minor character into a messenger of the Incubus. Although the Incubus is supposed to be a demon that just causes women to masturbate, the movie turns it into a supernatural force which literally drags things into (presumably) the depths of Hell. The bottom line: "Deadly Blessing" is not bad, though the last few moments are disappointing. |
