The title says "Frankstein Conquers the World", but there is just one quibble: he doesn't, at least not in this movie. Nevertheless, he is indeed a "controversial and dangerous monster" that eventually grows 60 feet tall and can regenerate missing limbs. These missing limbs, by the way, look like they were made out of papier mâché. Of course, there are plenty of other laughably campy items to see, things like wind-up police cars and limp street posts. Frankenstein even tries to kill a bird by throwing a tree at it! As is commonly the case with Japanese megamonster movies, there is one character who knows all along that the monster is not really evil (just confused and angry), and in this movie, it's a pretty Japanese scientist. Frankenstein proves his good side by fending off an elephantine horned toad, a menacing monster from the Mesozoic era, and thus you get to see yet another nonhistoric example of a battle between the caveman and the dinosaur. And yes, the dinosaur is someone wearing a rubber suit, which raises the camp value by a factor of ten. Meanwhile, the dubbing over the Japanese spectators is hilarious, mostly because the voices are more dramatic than the physical acting. The bottom line: While not exactly the high point of horror cinema, "Frankstein Conquers the World" is good campy violent fun. |
