Is this a joke? The horror genre is notorious for having banal dialogue, one-dimensional characters, and inept direction, but "Fever Lake" takes the cake. The movie starts off with a mother hiding her son from an axe-murderer, which seems scary enough. That is until they show the killer. Not only does he hold the exact same angry face for the entire scene, but he growls out his lines with the delivery of a wrestler and his eyes glow green. One-upping the axe-murderer is a white man playing a native American named Clear Spring. Never mind the fact that he has blue eyes, he wears an Indian costume, and you better believe it when he says, "The evil is coming" or "White man is stubborn"! If that isn't bad enough for you, there's a girl who gets attacked by nothing. Sure, there are a few hints that a wolf--with glowing green eyes--is chasing her, but when it "catches" her, it's as though the director told the actress, "Okay, I want you to stop, drop, and roll around in the leaves and just pretend you're being eaten by a wolf. We'll move the camera all over the place and sprinkle blood on you in between shots. The audience won't know the difference." It also takes a long time before one of the annoying teenagers (Cory Haim is one of them) actually gets killed, and while it's obvious who the murderer is, the movie tries to make it a mystery. Although this dud stars Cory Haim, it does nothing to maim his career since you can't hurt something that's already dead. The bottom line: If you want to make fun of a movie, "Fever Lake" is a good choice, but otherwise you'll be sorry if you ever see this. |
