"Final Destination" is one of the more original horror movies to come along. Unlike the typical slasher where amorous teenagers are sequentially murdered by a serial killer, this movie kills off its characters by a series of freak accidents. So far, this is the only flick where someone slips in the bathroom and somehow ends up getting strangled by a showerhead! The showerhead isn't alive or even animate; it just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time for one very unlucky teen. The protagonists of this story--played competently by Devon Sawa and Ali Larter--eventually learn that the accidents are not actually accidents but all part of an elaborate scheme by Death itself. It's as contrived and paranoid as it sounds, but that often works in the movie's favor since it generates suspense. However, "Final Destination" is not without its ridiculous elements, such as the puddle with a mind of its own and a cartoonishly wreckless teenager who should have died a long time ago. Even so, its good points outnumber the bad, and the film is recommended for horror buffs. The bottom line: "Final Destination" is quite good overall and one of the better horror films from the 90's era. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. 11 or 12 dots points to an essential item in a horror video collection. Even the dung beetles would be repelled by a movie rated with one or no dots. ** |
