You would think that a slasher flick with a name like "Final Exam" would be something like "Sorority House Massacre" where a bunch of college girls get naked and then murdered. And you would be right, but...it only happens to one girl! Everyone else dies with their clothes on. So don't let the title fool you. The murders are clustered toward the end, after 60+ minutes of character study. Although character study is a good thing, an hour of it in a slasher movie is simply too much. If it weren't for the two quick murders at the very beginning, you would probably wonder if this is even a horror film. Also, none of this character study has anything to do with the serial killer, and it only turns out to be padding which ultimately goes nowhere. Fortunately, the padding involves a lot of college hijinx; so it's not really boring, just rather pointless. The eerie piano soundtrack and dark, deserted college setting are very good, though you have a long wait before these ever come into play and it's all for not. Unfortunately, the ending is as pointless as the long character study. Almost immediately after the climatic battle with the killer, it promptly ends. The bottom line: "Final Exam" doesn't get a very good grade, but it would have been a good slasher movie if it spent more time on the killer and less on the inconsequential. |
