This is the first offering of the Hellraiser series, and it is a decent horror film with some highly memorable scenes, such as the fishhooks tearing the skin off of Frank Cotton. Unfortunately, "Hellraiser" is a little sluggish at times and needs to devote more time to Pinhead and his Gothic-looking Cenobites. They all take a back seat to Julia (played to perfection by Clare Higgins), who steals the show as the coldhearted stepmother luring her victims to their deaths. Also, Pinhead seems honorable compared to Julia and Frank, and he is supposed to be a demon! However, "Hellraiser" compensates those shortcomings with some extraordinary gore. Indeed, a human without skin is not a pretty sight! Neither are the methods which Julia uses to slaughter her victims. The plot itself is much more interesting and complex than what you find in a typical slasher movie, and this is one reason why Clive Barker receives such accolades for his horror stories. Overall, a fairly good, cerebral horror movie, followed by an even better sequel. |
